Solid trans-gender, turn of the century fare.
There's a point in the movie where the women, pretending to be men, dress as women, but they still look like men in dresses. Hilarious.

Excellent performances in a merely good film.

Close was so good I forgot she was playing the role and that I was looking at Albert Nobbs instead

Glenn Close delivers a knockout performance as a woman desperate for independence and respect, but instead finds struggle and woe.
Although by the end it begins to outstay its welcome, Albert Nobbs is entertaining and enjoyable - not to mention visually wonderful with the period sets and costumes.
An interesting and different entry into the period-drama category, but by no means one of the best.

I watched the first half of this many moons ago with BVH, who decided she couldn't bear the inevitable bad end that Nobbs was coming to. I finally finished it yesterday, and I must say the film's ending didn't do a lot for me, and harmed the positive view I had of the first half.

It's hard to take seriously when at every moment you are wondering how anyone could be fooled by Albert's gender play. All the characters perform roles required of them rather than life and breathe as people. Which in turn makes it quite difficult to feel sympathy for many of them, including Albert. Which is sad.
-
Listless study of a maddeningly inert central character, resulting in a static film that perpetually suggests a more interesting, dynamic story occurring just outside of frame. McTeer is fascinating and flamboyant, but Close's efforts amount to an admirable technical accomplishment rather than a fully embodied personality.

My word, Glenn Close is amazing.

I found thing movie interesting and enjoyable. Glenn Close was excellent.

Astonishing. Albert Nobbs is one of the worst films I have ever seen, with a misguided mess of a performance at the head from Glenn Close.

it is a great sweet story that explores with subtlety identity, loneliness and loss; this film, featuring an outstanding performance by GLENN CLOSE, is a well directed picture that never tries hard.
