Synopsis
Love. Betrayal. Death.
Three interconnected stories about the different strata of life in Mexico City all resolve with a fatal car accident. Octavio is trying to raise enough money to run away with his sister-in-law, and decides to enter his dog Cofi into the world of dogfighting. After a dogfight goes bad, Octavio flees in his car, running a red light and causing the accident. Daniel and Valeria's new-found bliss is prematurely ended when she loses her leg in the accident. El Chivo is a homeless man who cares for stray dogs and is there to witness the collision. Amores Perros is the first film in Iñárritu's "Death Trilogy".

There is a reason i will never watch Marley and Me, and it is not Owen Wilson. It is because i can't handle dogs dying, i know exactly how that film is going to end and i will have no part in it. The tricky buggers behind this film weren't so see-through, making a film that not only portrays cruelty and despair of human life, but reflected in canine life too. As soon as ''no dogs were harmed during the making of this film'' appeared in the opening credits, i knew i was in trouble.
Amores Perros is 154 minutes of pure tragedy and heart-break. It's hyper-violent, gritty, raw, and tough as hell to watch. It possesses an interesting baton-passing… -

This is Alejandro González Iñárritu’s debut and in many ways a rougher, less sentimental, more genuine proto-Babel. Like its spiritual successor, it is a set of interlocked stories of people and here too the connections between them are sometimes loose and contrived. It doesn’t matter, though, since the stories are fascinating and told with no holds barred.
At more than 2½ hours, Amores perros never feels boring. It’s a wonderful movie about second chances, and about how sometimes it’s not about having a good plan, but about knowing how to react if a plan finds you.

La película es increíblemente entretenida, gracias a un guión magistral y una dirección que mantiene la historia corriendo a un paso perfecto. Las actuaciones son convincentes y llenas de emoción.
Qué manera de empezar para Iñárritu. Recomendada.

Been trying to watch this film for ages, but couldn't find a version with subtitles. So when I saw this DVD in the bargainbin at the local DVDstore, I finally bought it. Have to say it is a very good movie. 3 different stories, linked together are shown in an uncompromising fashion. 2 things are holding me back from giving it an even better rating. Firstly it is 2½ hours long and I feel they could have cut out at least 20 minutes without changing it significantly. Secondly my expectations were very high as it is in the IMDB top 250 and while it is very good, I believe it is even better if you don't have any expectations when you watch it.

Oh man why has it took me till tonight to watch this film.
It was a tough ride, you get drawn in to each character perfectly and each 'story' could stand on its own. The final grouping together is brilliant, I didn't realise that 154 min had gone by.
So yeah, I guess you can tell I liked it, if you can handle dog abuse and complete misery I would definitely recommend this.

An uneven movie from when interlacing stories was all the rage in movies, personally I think this movie is affected by one of it's three stories being rather week, and while the other two are fairly strong the other brings them down. The general themes of love contrasted by violence are interesting and the contrasts made are certainly appealing.

La manera como la causalidad juega un papel fundamental en el desarrollo de la trama es excelente. Tres historias que al parecer no tienen nada que ver la una con la otra, se unen a raíz de un acontecimiento penoso. Por separado cada historia refleja a su modo, la bajeza de los impulsos y deseos del ser humano. Muy buena película y actuaciones respetables.
