Historical drama as it should be done - accurate in the story it tells, with great acting, great dialogue, explaining why historical figures acted as they did, telling an interesting important story without blinding everyone with its use of pretty dresses. And of course the presence of Richard Burton didn't hurt this film either!

Ambitious in terms of content rather than style, which is a remarkable choice for a costume drama of any era, Anne of the Thousand Days is a twisted tale that lends itself well to the late '60s. It feels modern with its candor about lust and sex that can be downright vulgar. This may not be the first of the genre to address sex, but it does so in a completely new way.
Few films have two lead characters that are more unredeeming. Anne and Henry's selfish motivations destroy everything in their path and it makes for a compelling narrative. Genevieve Bujold and Richard Burton are well-watched, as both enjoy chewing the scenery while their balance of power continuously shifts.…
