At times wonderful, at times painful, but always profound, Another Year is about a happy couple and their friends. If you know Mike Leigh, you know that it's more about character than plot. If you don't know Mike Leigh films, you've got a great project to work on.

A stunning, heartbreaking film, featuring one of the finest female performances of the 21st century so far in Lesley Manville. Mike Leigh's best film in years.

Never before have I seen such a real movie. Here we get to know bubbly people, real love for each other, daily problems and misguided humans. Everything that makes a family a family simply. Mike Leigh should be praised for how he with a strong and natural dialogue manages to bring out every single feeling his characters feel. Only with eyes and facial expressions they reveal their inner selfs to us.

I guess the film in many ways can be…

Magnificent film from Leigh, attempting and succeeding at one of the most difficult tasks for a filmmaker and storyteller: presenting a believable and compelling vision of goodness. Tom and Gerri, devoting themselves to the muck of the world (he a geologist, she a social worker, both avid gardeners), offer a welcoming home to friends in need. Leigh's economy of shots keeps the film engaging as each scene feels crucial. Manville and Broadbent lead the outstanding cast.

Gardening is a chore—the weeds, the watering, and the waiting to taste that first tomato. But the law of the harvest is so much more than the final product (though that’s especially nice). It’s perceiving the movement of air, the feel of the soil, and the bending of muscle. When Gerri lifts her face to the sun and breathes in the moment, I know she understands.

Poor Mary trying to live off borrowed light. As the dinner party reminisces about…

I started out liking this but by the end I didn't. It kind of turned into a statement about sloth, gluttony, and alcoholism. Great cast, music, and cinematography though. It's a good film but not my cup of tea.
