This long and bloated adaptation of a long and bloated book is quite unremarkable. Its story is meandering and kind of pointless and the production values are at best average. I’ve come to learn that Hollywood as absolutely obsessed with these 18th century European stories during the 30s, possibly because the wig wearing decadence was of interest during the depression, but this obsession spawned a lot of turkeys like this. I fell asleep while watching this. (To be fair, I was really tired.) The best part is Claude Rains as a dastardly villain.
