2001 Directed by Francis Ford Coppola
Synopsis
Apocalypse Now Redux is a 2001 extended version of Francis Ford Coppola's epic war film Apocalypse Now, which was originally released in 1979. Coppola, along with editor/long-time collaborator Walter Murch, added 49 minutes of scenes that had been cut out of the original film. It represents a significant re-edit of the original version.

Every scene that has been added does little to aid the narrative and hugely distracts from the flow of the film. The result also distracts the viewer from the main focus of the film. Having said that, the bulk of the film is Apocalypse Now , and that shit is faultless.

I can see now that it is too long. The first time I watched it I was blown away, not knowing what to expect but one must realize that it is better to stick to the original.

I had watched Apocalypse Now a very long time ago and barely remembered anything, except that it was a great war movie.
I enjoyed revisiting this classic masterpiece but the Redux version seemed a little too long with its extra 50 minutes that probably don't contribute much to the story (which already was slow-paced in the original version). I shall rewatch the original version soon, maybe as part of The December Project.

As much as I enjoyed this film there is still one memory that sticks with me from seeing it in the cinema in 2001.
The cinema in Edinburgh I saw this at had decided to show the film in 2 parts with a 10 minute break in the middle. All the way through the first half a group of people at the back of the screen, which only held about 30-40 people, had talked non stop despite being asked to stop. At the break they got up and left, am not sure if they thought the film was finished or if they got bored but they never came back for the 2nd half.
Never have I enjoyed the 2nd half of a film more.

"I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream; that's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight razor... and surviving"

"Are my methods unsound?"
"I don't see any method at all, sir."
I've seen Apocalypse Now several times, and though my recollections of the film have often been a bit hazy, key scenes remain memorable, thanks to Coppola's striking visuals and accompanying music.
The problem I have with the Redux edition (all I could locate at the time of purchase) is the additional footage of the dinner at the plantation. That bit did nothing to further the story and consequently it did nothing for me... except induce a little nap. So for this viewing, I skipped that part, and I was happier with the result. A little closer to the original theatrical version I was so familiar with.

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

This version has its detractors but the additional 50 minutes adds a weight to Apocalypse Now that makes it more of an endurance trial, which contributes to the overall experience. The original is a masterpiece unto itself but Redux is version of the film that makes the viewer feels as if they've been in the boat with Willard and crew the whole time.

Holy. Shit.

It's a pretty mind blowing film, in all areas. Just....woa.
Would have hate to have been the 1st AD or the Safety officer on set that's for sure. -
This is an epic and remarkable war movie. For me, the redux adds just the right amount of additional details to give this classic more reason to shine.
Apocalypse now is a truly haunting and terrifying tale about the horrors of war, specifically the period when the American forces were in total chaos in the Vietnam war, as is highlighted by Sheen's character's lack of finding commanding officers for most of the posts he visits as he continues on a mission to find the the renegade Kurtz (Brando).
The direction and soundtrack is superb, I was particularly impressed by the war sequences; I never figured such an old movie would have such good action shots. Moreover, the acting is superb;…

Incomparable. By far the grandest and most daring example of direction ever. Francis Ford Coppola met the expectations of his peers and heightened them to extremes beyond the level of genius.

Each time I watch this film it gets better. Such balls. Not really a war film. A surreal boat ride into a simpler more primal time.
