Arizona Dream
1993 Directed by Emir Kusturica
Synopsis
An Innuit hunter races his sled home with a fresh-caught halibut. This fish pervades the entire film, in real and imaginary form. Meanwhile, Axel tags fish in New York as a naturalist's gofer. He's happy there, but a messenger arrives to bring him to Arizona for his uncle's wedding. It's a ruse to get Axel into the family business. In Arizona, Axel meets two odd women: vivacious, needy, and plagued by neuroses and familial discord. He gets romantically involved with one, while the other, rich but depressed, plays accordion tunes to a gaggle of pet turtles

Strange and often hilarious film with a great cast, Johnny Depp,Vincent Gallo, Fay Dunaway, Jerry Lewis and Lili Taylor, can't go wrong with that. Depp is pretty fantastic in this role, actually playing a straight character in a weird movie, scenes between him and Dunaway are pretty great but I think overall the cast gel pretty well. Story is off the wall, and I really love how its directed.

Another quirky Johnny Depp performance that helped build his reputation for quirky performances. *yawn*

Probably the film that has spent the longest in my unwatched pile till now (reckon its been on the shelf at least 4 years). I was curious to see how Emir Kusturica’s very particular brand of dramatic farce would translate into American – very well as it happens! That’s mainly down to his cast, who all throw themselves into the madness with aplomb. A delirious dinner-table sequence is a highlight, and up there with the best of the directors work. Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway in particular stand out, both giving impressively physical comedic performances (including a pretty rough sex scene!). Also nice to see Jerry Lewis getting a bit of slapstick too, though it’s a shame he doesn’t get…
