You know you've entered another universe when an Oscar winning actress tells Russell Brand with a straight face to "wash his winky....properly". I almost pissed myself.

Apparently Dudley Moore can't be replaced by just anybody.

It's definitely not great, but it still cracks me up.

As remakes go, Arthur isn’t terrible but it is rather forgettable. The film’s appeal will no doubt depend on your tolerance for Russell Brand. I don’t particularly mind him so his man-child schtick is, whilst far from endearing, is at least amusing on occasion. The problem is whilst the role seems perfect for him he is curtailed by the low certification meaning although it has his trademark linguistic flourishes he is neutered in other, more family friendly, ways.
The real ace up the film’s sleeve is Helen Mirren as Arthur’s nanny. She has great comic timing and provides a bit of heart that is absent elsewhere. Sadly she is only in the film for a relatively short time meaning most…

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I know that this film comes with a pre-warning. I know that as with so many remakes of classic old films, you should loath it instantly. I also know that Russell Brand is an acquired cup of tea and that most people wouldnt even give this a look in. But I really enjoyed it. Is that bad? Am I bad?
Helen Mirren is dry and scathing as Arthur's Nanny/stand in Mother, while Jennifer Garner shows again that she can be good in comedy following an interesting and heartwarming performance in Juno. In this she isnt heartwarming, more devious, dasterdly and frisky to say the least, but it works. However, and shoot me for saying it, the star of the show is Brand. He's eccentric nature, foppish looks and stupid take on life suits the character of the ageing man child perfectly and he is funny. I've said it...he was funny. I liked it. Oh god what is wrong with me?

Although funny at times, it left a lot to be desired and Brand doesn't play a likeable character.

Some good jokes, but a series of 'look how drunk and zany he is' gags from Brand didn't give me a whole lot to hang on to. Lack luster performances overall. A sentimental, forced and contrived ending.

Arthur: We shouldn't get married. We have nothing in common. You love horses. I don't trust them. Their shoes are permanent. Who makes that kind of a commitment to a shoe?

Russell Brand is actually endearing. I take back what I said about him after I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
