Reviews of Bad Teacher 2011

A comedy that is not just hit and miss, the misses are often very lazy attempts at humour and pin droppingly awful. Cameron Diaz is not the best suited to the role but then again it is a pretty shoddily written character, her story arc basically being 'I am a bit of a shallow dick to I am not so shallow but still a dick'. What redeems it somewhat is some of the supporting cast/characters making for much more entertaining…

I've noticed quite a lot of vitriol pointed at this movie for whatever reason, most of it squarely aimed at Diaz, whom people seem to dislike to a bafflingly high degree. However, characters who hate their job and constantly find ways to get out of work or do the bare minimum will always be a pretty solid source of comedy for me. Add into the mix a pretty great sarcastic performance by Jason Segel and a pretty great lame-guy performance…

I realized that, even though film is a form of art, actors are not automatically artists. Some are content just doing what they do, they have jobs, get new roles, make good money and are still talked and written about. An Oscar nomination aren't important for these, eh, actors. Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake are, hm, good examples. They just sign up for the next piece of crap their agent arranges for them. Not like they could win anything anyhow.
When push comes to shove, I guess I've never been much for comedies. But seriously, this is shit right?

Not sure who thought having a totally repugnant main character (Cameron Diaz) was a good idea for a comedy. She's repulsive, and is made up like the Joker's drunk aunt (who I guess needs to also be wearing Joker make up, for that analogy to work). The character's "arc" is the total opposite of being believable or in any way desirable.
Everyone in the supporting cast has moments of greatness though, making me wish there was a version completely devoid of the main character. The way Jason Segel will wander into a scene, mock everything about it, and wander out is almost worth a look.

The key problem with Bad Teacher is, well, that she's not really all that bad is she? This is a classic example of a comedy never pushing itself enough in the direction it really deserves to go. Jake Kasdan's comedy has flashes of something more, something funnier or riskier, but it never quite has the balls to really go there - as a result the whole thing is underheated, eventually pandering to the need for a touch of humanity in…
