Batman: Year One
2011 Directed by Sam Liu, Lauren Montgomery
Synopsis
A merciless crime turns a man into an outlaw.
Two men come to Gotham City: Bruce Wayne after years abroad feeding his lifelong obsession for justice and Jim Gordon after being too honest a cop with the wrong people elsewhere. After learning painful lessons about the city's corruption on its streets and police department respectively, this pair learn how to fight back their own way. With that, Gotham's evildoers from top to bottom are terrorized by the mysterious Batman and the equally heroic Gordon is assigned to catch him by comrades who both hate and fear him themselves. In the ensuing manhunt, both find much in common as the seeds of an unexpected friendship are laid with additional friends and rivals helping to start the legend.

Batman. Year One wasn't bad, but it's lack of details and character development really hurt it for me. The animation was good, as was the voice acting, but it wasn't enough for me to give it anything other than an average rating. Fans of the comics will probably enjoy this more than I did.

Well, what a pleasant surprise. Expecting to be comparing this to Nolan's saga all the way through, this kept me completely focused on the events that play out here. What we have is a brutal, vulnerable Dark Knight; Batman is angrier and more uncompromising than ever.
But this isn't a Batman film. It's a Jim Gordon film. Bryan Cranston and the OTT animated format turn the normally mild-mannered lieutenant into a complete bad-ass on a number of occasions. Is this a bad thing? Hell no!
If I have one complaint, it's the lack of a proper antagonist. We have a few characters out to thwart our two 'heroes' (I say that in inverted commas because they're more sinners than saints),…

A very solid yet underwhelming adaption of the Year One comic. As a huge Batman fan I was initially attracted to this movie because of Bryan Cranston suprisingly who plays a very good Jim Gordon. Although this film should really be called "Gordon. Year One" I disliked this Batman due to the voice acting and were it not for Cranston I probably would have avoided it. Despite not having Kevin Conroy I felt this movie stays true to the original Batman origin and I would recommend it to hardcore fans.

And so it begins..
The Swedish premiere of The Dark Knight Rises isn't until midnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, so I'm starting this off today. This is an absolutely excellent adaptation of Frank Miller's work, which I haven't read yet. I know, shame on me. Still, you get the Franky feeling all through it, weaved like a yarn of corruption, darkness, power, desperation and..naked men hogtied. Lots of naked men hogtied.
The voice work is servicable (Ben McKenzie is far from the best Batman, but he's also not the worst) and the design and animation is just great. Gorgeous seeding backdrops, quiet pace with quick momentum to interrupt. The dialogue, narration and feeling of a desperate Gotham is what makes…

"You can never escape me. Nothing harms me. But I know pain. I know pain. And sometimes I share it with someone like you."
The Legend is born.
Thanks to Del Boy for recommending this to me. This is pretty slick.

This could be the best Batman movie I've seen. The origin of both Batman and Gordon and their intertwining lives were both presented perfectly; very dark, yet with some underlying humour and heart. Definitely one of my favourite cartoon movies ever.

What are you, dense? Are you retarded or something? It's the Goddamn Batman: Year One!
Nicely done animation of Frank Miller's comic. I think the comic was better though :p -
Not a bad animated movie but could have been a lot better. I personally didn't like the focus on Jim Gordon. Still a well made and enjoyable Batman film, nicely animated as well.

Bryan Cranston as Gordon - beautiful.
-
Pretty good adaptation of the comic. I would have preferred a better voice actor for Bruce Wayne/Batman and the animation lacks the grittiness of Mazzucchelli's artwork but apart from that it's solid. It's just a straight up frame by frame animated film version.

Competent adaptation of the comics (with same name).
-
Solid voice acting and animation. One of the better comic animated films, for sure.
-
Bryan Cranston (or his voice) really make this film adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel (comic book) really shine.
-
Like all the DC animations it looks great and really invokes the look of the original comic but almost too much. Plus the voice acting is a bit flat, even Bryan Cranston sounds a little bored.

For an animated feature that is only an hour long, Batman: Year One is an intense, dark and powerful little flick that is brimming with drama. The animation and voice-acting are flawless and the story is a faithful adaptation to Frank Miller's source.
Being someone who is intrinsically familiar with the comic source of Batman: Year One I thoroughly enjoyed this -- but I have the feeling some of the appeal might be lost in those who haven't. Stepping back and trying to look at this from a perspective devoid of the comic, Batman: Year One might feel a little slow and stark -- the drama comes from Wayne and Gordon's inner, personal struggles and the entertainment value doesn't really…
