Bette Midler is truly amazing in this movie. What I love about Beaches is that it's a story about undying friendship, not some sappy love story. The chemistry between Barbara Hershey and Bette Midler is perfect! I've seen it more times than I can count, and it never stops being funny, sad, or just plain awesome.

One of my favorites. A total chick flick, but a good chick flick. It's a love story between two friends. It sounds boring but it's not. It's funny, it's sad, it might open up your tear ducks by the end. Bette Midler is at her best vocally. It's also safe for men to watch.

As much as Beaches eschews realism in favour of heartstring-snapping sentimentality it's tough to deny its warmth and there are even moments of true bravura filmmaking (the stunning one-take argument in the department store, for example). Neither Midler nor Hershey have ever been better and you'd have to be a sociopath to not be crying buckets by the end.

There must be a place in hell where this piece of shit plays on a loop to torture the minds of the damned. What a nightmare! It's like it even tried to outdo itself in awfulness, it had a window where it could have ended on a sort of decent note (not that it would make it remotely good or anything), but it just kept on pushing. Fuck! This was a tough one to sit through.

Bette Midler makes this 3.5 stars. She's charming and brassy and fantastic.

This used to be one of my "I need a cry movies" when I was in my twenties. Almost too scared to watch it now.
