The best part about this film is De Niro. While he has some scenery chewing that borders on excessive, we haven't seen him dig this deep into a role in quite some time. The rest, while inventive visually from director Paul Weitz, is a bit recessive as a piece of drama. It doesn't know how to expand from what it's working with and tends to recede when it should reach out, expand, "go for more," as it were. It knows exactly what it should be doing dramatically and thus is going through the motions, instead of letting us into whatever subtext is at hand. Paul Dano is a good lead to match De Niro's supporting turn; in the end, Julianne…

America has produced only three classic writers - Mark Twain, J.D. Salinger and me.
Jonathan FlynnRobert De Niro is one of my favorite actors but I don't remember the last time I saw him in anything good. This is probably the best performance I've seen from De Niro in quite some time, even though it goes into scene chewing a time or two.
What's nice is that he's actually playing an interesting character for a change. Along with Paul Dano they offer a complex father/son relationship that usually heads in a predictable direction in movies, but it doesn't in this film.
Not going for the predictable is great, but the film does suffer in the final act. It doesn't…

You remember when Robert De Niro rehearsed that famous Marlon Brando monologue from On The Waterfront at the end of Raging Bull?
"You don't understand! I coulda had class! I coulda been a contender! I coulda been somebody! Instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it..."
Who woulda thought we'd ever be saying the same thing about Robert De Niro and his own career?
Luckily, Paul Dano is the diamond that gives this bronze medal some shine. Also, De Niro isn't THAT bad here. I mean, there are points where he's so unbelievably over the top he's chewing scenery, but there are other where he's genuinely really good, something we haven't said about the man in…

Robert de Niro is amazing in this film , the story is nice .. but it's easily forgotten

I was surprised to see what the critics had to say about this after seeing it, the ranking on RT is 50-something %. I personally thought it was fantastic, definitely not a masterpiece but it was moving and it was awesome to see Robert De Niro and Paul Dano playing Father and Son, they were both great. After this and Silver Lining's Playbook i'm realising that even though De Niro has been in some silly kids and average movies lately he has by no means lost his touch this is his most electrifying performance in years. Paul Dano was just brilliant as writer Nick Flynn this is the story of a young writer who never really knew his dad he…

Drama, Robert DeNiro, Paul Danone and Julianne Moore
Nick Flynn (Paul Dano) is in his twenties and hasn't seen his Father Jonathan (Roert DeNiro) in eight teen years. When out of the blue Nick's dad calls and asks him to help move. After this meeting it brings up sad memories for Nick, he begins a ruff relationship with him and discovers his dad is a hate filled person. Both are aspiring writers so they have something in common.
Although mostly predictable I still enjoyed this movie. DeNiro is awesome and no doubt makes the movie. The only problem I had with the movie was the ending, it's abrupt and all of the sudden it's over. It's worth the watch and maybe it will remind you to give a hand to people that need it when you can.

While i really liked Silver Linings playbook and thrilled to see De Niro get another oscar nomination, as he really was great, i also feel after seeing this it could be the case of Ticking off the boxes, as i feel his performance in this film Being Flynn he has been overlooked in a big way, and due to Pauil Dano having the bulk of work, you could even argue this is a support turn. but nevermind, i hope people get to see this, apart from the performances, i liked the overall story of father and son, coming into each others lives once more. some honest observations about life on the street and homeless also worthy. 2012 a great year for Bobby

For the most part, I enjoyed this film. Both Robert De Niro and Paul Dano give good performances, even if they sometimes chew the scenery. But what's really keeping me from calling this "good" is that the script keeps everything on a pretty basic level, and never really goes THAT deep into a whole lot. A competent film, but that's about it.

It's as heavy as a sack of hammers. The story is interesting but is told in a messy way. Time and pacing are issues. Not only are there numerous flashbacks that are jarring, but we get no sense of how long certain problems have been going on for certain characters. What feels like a few days or weeks ends up being months or years. Good performances make it watchable.

Not as bad as the reviews are saying but not mind blowing either. This makes for a rainy Sunday afternoon film if you wanna lay around all day and be a bum.
