Bel Ami is a stagnant and paper thin costume drama set at the tail end of the 19th Century in Paris. Robert Pattinson plays a social climber who seduces his way to power and fortune yet the film fails to capture his dubious lack of morals in an engaging way. He may sleep his way through French high society but you get no sense of him actually being able to seduce these women as he is so blandly portrayed. Part of the problem is Pattinson, a man who struggles to play a conflicted and duplicitous character, but the bigger problem is the underdeveloped script and pedestrian direction.
At least he is afforded some development though unlike his co-stars that merely…

I was kind of with this movie for the first fifteen minutes or so, but it quickly devolved into a complete disaster after that. It jumped all over the place and I'm sorry, but I just did not believe Pattinson as a lothario; no way all of these powerful women would fall for him. I don't necessarily think it is Pattinson's fault, since the script is an absolute mess and nobody is properly developed, but we had this feeling he was about to sink his fangs into the neck of every passing female (and the occasional male).

Film #77 of The December Project
Dreadful. Just absolutely dreadful in every way. When it isn't mind-numbingly boring, it's aggravating. It's just about a guy who seduces a bunch of women to climb the social ladder in Paris. There's no intrigue, no drama, no excitement, no character development. This could've been a fantastic costume drama, but blunders in casting, writing, and directing completely ruined it.

Originally a novel by Guy De Maupassant, a French author who published the book in 1885, reaching classic status over the last 140 years, Bel Ami is a period drama centering on an ex-military man, Georges Duroy, who was born into poverty and seeks to get out of it. To achieve this he makes relations not only with the wealthy and powerful men in Paris, but what is more important; their spouses, who have influence over the men and therefore can be seen as more powerful. These woman are as follows; Madeleine Forestier (portrayed by Uma Thurman) wife of a political editor who serves as his secret lover and wife, Madame Walter (Kristin Scott Thomas) who becomes his lover as…

Pattinson was just out of his element here. Much like his girlfriend (in everything she's done), he just came across emotionless and blank. Christina Ricci was good, though. Dynamite areola's.

Wow. What a fail movie. Boring to its very core. A protagonist that is so dull, that he makes looking at sea gulls interesting. I won't recommend this even if you have NOTHING else to do.

Based on Guy de Maupassont’s novel of the same name, Bel Ami follows George Duroy (Robert Pattinson) as he returns to France following a stint of military service in Algeria. Upon his return he does everything within his power to become a powerful member of society, from pulling in favours from military buddies to doing sexual favours for their wives. As he climbs the social ladder Duroy’s lust for power cannot be sated causing conflict amongst those he has become close to.
Robert Pattinson is working remarkably hard to escape the trappings of being an attractive teen star, like his Twilight and Harry Potter co-stars, Pattinson has been striving to try and further his career so that he is no…

Pattinson isn't all bad in the paper of the handsome George (Bel Ami), and Uma don't stayed behind too. Is a movie, not a good one, but still, not a bad too.
