I knew I liked this film and I wondered why I had only given it 3.5 stars. Luckily it was on TV the other day and I was able to catch it again.
This is a wonderful movie. I see it has its fans. On my part I like to think I know what takes place a bit more than the next guy. I used to own a boxer dog, well two, and my wife and I traveled around Norway displaying them at shows. We didn't put much effort into it, a boxer doesn't need much grooming at all. Mostly we just wiped his paws with a wet cloth, removed some drool and entered the ring. It went surprisingly well…

I love this movie. Maybe it's because I grew up watching the Westminister Kennel Club Dog Show on TV as a family event every year, I don't know. But when I'm stressed or sad or whatever, this is all I want to watch. And I do.

The likes of The Office and Parks and Recreation can only be thankful to Christopher Guest. He is outstanding in what he does and Best In Show is no excepetion. Right up there with everyones favourite Spinal Tap.
The characters in Best In Show really shine through and the actors who portray them are fantastic in their respective roles.

Christopher Guest's movies always feel like "lulz" rather than "ROFL". You know what I'm saying?
Like "This Is Spinal Tap", "Best In Show" captures the spectrum of obsessive dog-owners brilliantly. I can't imagine how anyone couldn't relate, through either their mom, or a neighbour, or even themselves (though you'd never admit it, would you?). Most of the movie clever-funny in the detail of humor, but it's the well-rounded cast that sells them with pitch perfect deliveries. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the last act didn't lean so heavily on Fred Willard essentially doing a stand-up bit while the plot wrapped itself up.

You know, my mom breeds and shows dogs. So I spent a lot of time at dog shows growing up (against my will I assure you). And I'm here to tell you: the people in this movie are nowhere as crazy as the real deal.
Okay, Parker Posey might be, but the rest of them don't even come close.

I'd heard it mentioned on some tv programme about comedy films a while ago now, but it was on the HTC Watch app for 5p so thought I'd give it a go. Also, being a person who owns 2 dogs, one of whom is a tiny little pappillon who my wife keeps threatening to take to dog shows, I thought if nothing else it'll be easily-relatable humour. Also, despite not loving Spinal Tap as much as most other people do, I did like it and this is written/directed by Christopher Guest so that gives it a bit more credibility.
Anyway, all that aside, I quite liked it and at the same time didn't really find it all that "laugh out…

[Seen in 2000, not sure when, neglected to date stamp back then]
'Best in Show' retreads territory immortalized in 'Waiting for Guffman' (a companion piece it could easily be interchangeable with). The old adage "funny is funny" is firmly in place, making it heartily worthwhile - especially for those unfamiliar with past efforts by Christopher Guest.

Cute, funny and best of all there were so many dogs!!

pretty fantastic

So here's a thing that some of you know and most won't: I used to be deadly afraid of most dogs, except for ones that were so small they could be muzzled with one hand and stuffed into a duffel bag with another. To make a very long story short, I no longer am and in fact am now annoyingly besotted with dogs. (To make it long, you can read this and this.)
Meanwhile, BEST IN SHOW was a film that I probably have seen six times - twice in the theatre (not uncommon in Portland at the turn of the century, where second run theaters serve beer and pizza and had $2/$3 ticket prices) and then several times on…

Built around great characters. Christopher Guest is hilarious. Parker Posey and Fred Willard are also very funny. Great as far as mockumentaries are concerned. This proves that going off-script works if you have the right cast.

Extremely funny, satisfying, and wonderfully paced. Also makes excellent use of a very stacked ensemble cast.
-
A criminally funny improv comedy with one of the best ensembles of the new millennium.

Best in Show is Christopher Guest's hilarious satire on the world of dog shows and it is easily one of the funniest films ever. Its humour comes from the vivid characters and the actors, who bring a real sense of depth and warmth to their roles.

Hilarious. Parker Posey is fantastic, of course. Loved it!
