Boy
2012 Directed by Taika Waititi
Synopsis
It's 1984, and Michael Jackson is king - even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. Here we meet Boy, an 11-year-old who lives on a farm with his gran, a goat, and his younger brother, Rocky (who thinks he has magic powers). Shortly after Gran leaves for a week, Boy's father, Alamein, appears out of the blue. Having imagined a heroic version of his father during his absence, Boy comes face to face with the real version-an incompetent hoodlum who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years before. This is where the goat enters.

I'd seen the poster for this movie (I think most likely on this very site) a bunch of times, but knew nothing about the film. People wiser than me will know more, but to my knowledge this has not been released in North America. I checked Amazon, and the only DVD listed was an Australian import. This makes no sense to me, as Boy is an extremely accessible movie. It is funny, very well acted, and directed masterfully. Maybe it is because I have been watching so much melodramatic garbage recently, but Boy just blew me away. I thought the story flowed nicely, and hit a lot of areas that Once Were Warriors hit, just in a much more natural…

Constant references to Michael Jackson and E.T, the 80's setting, use of the word 'egg' as an insult, a samurai gang, drugs and liquor : how could this not be great?
Funny, touching and great acting from the youngsters and some choice clowning around by the writer and director, not to mention his impressive head of hair in what has already joined the list of my favourite films.

A great kiwi film. The kids were really fabulous. The film could be heartbreaking if it wasn't so light hearted, which lets the film enjoy the naievity and optimism of the boy. I'm not that keen on Taika's smuggery, but he's made another film to be proud of.

An utterly charming film about a boy enamored with his absent (and absent-minded) father. Filled with second-hand embraces of '80s American pop culture, and not only Michael Jackson, but "E.T." too, and the "Tron" logo printed all over children's clothing, scenes near mirroring Bill Murray's character in "Caddyshack," as well as the Fonz being a name for ridicule. Beyond the eighties too is an adoption of the over the top silliness of "Napoleon Dynamite"—and that one sticks for about the first 3/4 of the movie. Afterward we get pushed into the whole narrative arc obligation sort of thing, served-up with the reluctance that usually fades me out of these sorts of projects. "Eagle vs. Shark" may very well be better for me, but this one is awesome too. It's delightful nonetheless and one I'll keep in my back pocket for suggestion.

A quirky and atypical movie, the main character of the boy trying to find his place but he is not the good boy character we so often get in this circumstances, he lies a lot, he abuses what little power he has over his brother and cousins, and yet you feel for him. His brother with the superpowers and the drawings really give a great fantastic feeling to it, sort of makes you feel like a kid can make magic out of playing with a branch.

This movie is fucking amazing!

#3 for my mini movie marathon! Loved that I didn't know anything about the plot except the lead character likes Michael Jackson. The movie itself was really simplistic, and chaming and just easy to appreciate. It took us to New Zealand's countryside, which I wanna go to someday. I loved the kids, I loved their accents, the characters, the story, the dialogue. Every bit of it. No idea whether this was underrated or underseen in North America but I think you all should see this gem! I seem to be liking all the movies I been watching.

Taika Waititi wrote, directed and stared in this extraordinary follow up to his 2007 comedy 'Eagle Vs Shark'. Set in the 80’s in the small Kiwi town of Waihau Bay, this warm and heartfelt film follows a young boy named Boy going about his childhood years living with his brother Rocky and a goat on his grandmother’s farm. With his father absent from his life, Boy has a fictional image of him as a courageous war hero, that is until he returns and Boy meets the real version: an hopeless lout who has only returned so he can find some money he had buried on the farm.

This is a lovely film about a boy growing up in the 80s in New Zealand who idolises Michael Jackson and idealises his long-lost father who is kind of a scumbag. It has a cute visual style with some very nice animated sequences. I kind of got a Wes Anderson vibe from this; albeit with less cynicism. The coast of New Zealand provides a wonderful backdrop; NZ always looks so good on film damn it!
