John Singleton's debut brings a pressing issue to film in a bold and thought-provoking way. Obviously completely detached from the living conditions depicted in Boyz N the Hood I can't compare it to real life but it certainly gives some perspective on things. Although laid out to be clichéd and exploitative, the film is actually very intelligent in the way it creates atmosphere and ultimately emotionally involving. In a way it reminds me a lot of La Haine which I also saw not too long ago, focusing on a group of adolescents growing up in a place no one should have to grow up in. Small things like cars driving around in the background almost become threats and the nightly…

One of the most emotional, realistic and powerful coming of age/crime movies I've ever seen. It had been quite a few years since I had seen this film, and damn did I forget how great this movie is. The performances across the board are excellent. Cuba Gooding Jr. (what the hell happened to that guy?), Morris Chestnut, and Ice Cube are all terrific, they share amazing chemistry with each other on screen as you really believe they're brothers/friends that would do anything for each other. People might give Ice Cube crap because he's a rapper turned actor, but I really do think he's a solid actor, and he's great here especially in the last 30 minutes of the film. He's…

Somehow never seen this before. It sure is dated, and the music seems to have come from an entirely different movie, but in its best moments, and there are a good amount of them, it reminded me of the movie Killer of Sheep might have been if it were made 15 years later. It shows the same kind of neighborhood Burnett captured in Killer of Sheep and its spiritual sequel, My Brother's Wedding, but here, it has rotted in the era of Reagan and Bush. Burnett may have been more subtle in his anger, but the lack of subtlety here is more than justified.

Ein Klassiker des anderen Gangsterfilms. Ruhig erzählt mit guter Charakterentwicklung und einem Downer Ende.

Do the Right Thing + Hoop Dreams + American Graffiti + Friday = Boyz N The Hood.
So, why don't I love it even more?
I can point to no flaws in this movie. Every detail, every performance, every shot... works, and more than works, is exactly as it should be. Am I simply desensitized to and over-saturated with what it is saying? -
Character depth runs throughout (especially Ice Cube). For most of us, it's a look into a different world entirely. Watching the characters struggle on screen brings quite an emotional punch.

a very straight-forward tale of the life the ghetto (i guess, how could i know). thoroughly enjoyable even if quite preachy at times. bears a rewatch.

Why didn't I watch this years ago?

This is not a fun film; it’s not meant to be. And it’s not one I’ll be watching a second time. But I’m glad I watched it once. It’s a very powerful film, and I’m not one inclined to trot out that overused word very often. Read full review.

It's a long time since I watched Boyz N The Hood and I remembered it fondly. I'm happy to say that it lived up to my expectations and although some of the 'messages' in the film are pretty heavy handed (at one point the young characters walk towards a red 'Stop' sign before finding a dead body) I really enjoyed re-watching this coming of age story set in the Los Angeles 'Hood'
Being a single father to a young son, I was deeply moved by the relationship between Laurence Fishburne's character 'Furious Styles' and his son played by Cuba Gooding Jnr. Singleton handles all the relationships in the film sympathetically and this is the films strength that tempers the more…
