Reviews of Brainstorm 1983

The story was okay, but the changes in aspect ratio, James Horner's score, and the awesome matte paintings pushed this baby to four stars.

Some ways it feels like a prequel to Strange Days. The 'Brainstorm' sequences look fantastic on Blu-ray, the other scenes somewhat less so. Trumbull really should direct more movies.

Dug it, although it's a shame the 70mm gear at the theater isn't ready yet. A welcome reminder that Louise Fletcher is fantastic, and it seems Christopher Walken didn't really have a pre-self-parody period.
(Also, didn't those modems with acoustic couplers top out at like 300 baud? Sending VR through that must have involved amazing compression!)

Cerebral thriller. Mostly well done, but some of the character motivations aren't well fleshed out. Great visuals.

Part of the 29th Annual Ohio 24-Hour Science Fiction Marathon: I hadn't seen this film since the 80s on VHS. It was great to see again on the big screen as an adult. Loved the use of different aspect ratios. It's way out there and gets crazy spiritual at times - a product of its time. But it's a neat look at what virtual reality could be. And boobs.

True science fiction. Brainstorm has captivating technology, real human drama, and leaves you with plenty to think about.
I watched this after learning of its existence through Harry Knowles and being on set as he interviewed Director Douglas for Ain't It Cool With Harry Knowles. Glad I watched it!

Interesting, high-concept film that does not quite deliver despite the very best intentions. The early idea of a device that can record someone's experience to be played back to someone else is great and was taken for 1995's "Strange Days". The potential here was great but it never goes as far as it could. Director Douglas Trumbell was clearly less interested in the story than he was of the visual design and his own new aspect ratio. MGM backed away…

Director Douglas Trumbull’s film of Brainstorm had a troubled production history. The director was best known for his special effects mastery, on films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and for directing the cult science fiction movie Silent Running. Expectations were high for Brainstorm, especially since the film and its effects were in part designed as a showcase for the new Super Panavision 70mm film technology. Tragically however, one of the film’s main stars, Natalie Wood, died in a drowning…

While this movie was interesting in concept, especially for the 80′s, the movie was a little hard to follow. It was almost if they had an idea at the beginning and then switched half way through it. Christopher Walken stars as a researcher who creates a device that can record the brain waves the record sights, smells, and sounds, then they can be played back for peoples enjoyment; basically virtual reality. People start using the device for wrong reasons, which…
