Pedro Almodovar: *makes another melodrama*
Me: talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, totally not even been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it
I would very much like to see an erotic vampire romance by Almodovar now, please!
Broken Embraces. Los abrazos rotos. 2009. Directed by Pedro Almodovar.
This is Pedro Almodovar at his best with regard to story telling and mixing genres but he relies on the one genre (NOIR) that mixes well with romance, drama, and thriller genres. Truffaut and De Palma are influences I think of when I watch Broken Embraces. In fact, this is his Hitchcockian genre hopper with a stellar script, amazing sets, brilliant set furniture, a noir score by Alberto Iglesias, awe inspiring cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto, and an all star Almodovarian cast including Penelope Cruz as Lena. In most films, Madrid is a character. Whereas, Broken Embraces is filmed somewhat in Madrid, the interiors of Madrid’s sets, apartments, and homes become the…
Por algum motivo fiquei pensando em como Penélope Cruz e Natalie Portman combinariam demais fazendo papel de irmãs
Aqui tem a prova de que Penélope consegue ser perfeita de todo jeito e estilos
Broken Embraces feels like a more mature Almodóvar film. For starters, there's no rape or sexual assault. Though that doesn't mean the characters are able to escape Almodóvar's usual melodramatic pain and torment. Broken Embraces has less comedic trimmings than many Almodóvar efforts and takes itself sufficiently seriously. It's a complex, twisty story with multiple timelines and perspectives. It draws on memory, love, and pain to create a ripe melodrama that is very engaging. It has some very cool shots, and Penélope Cruz steals the film (as usual). What I like about Broken Embraces is that it's a real love story, even if it is caught in a melodrama. The passion of the love, especially in the sex scenes, creates…
Review In A Nutshell:
If I started my journey with Almodovar with Broken Embraces, I probably wouldn’t have wanted to explore further into his filmography. I was fortunate enough to begin my journey with The Skin I Live In, no doubt a outlier of the director’s trademark work, but in retrospect it actually features much of the working elements that are found in his best films; the sense of melodrama, the mystery of it all, the strong and committed performances from its cast; he was using the perfect formula, adding only a dark colouring to masquerade it all. It wasn’t until seeing Volver and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown where I started to familiarise with the director’s…
Pain and more pain. Almodóvar always breaks it. In this case he didn't use vibrant colors constantly as he usually does but he kept an impressive aesthetic all the same. The script is super cute. The movie is flawless. Every time I finish an Almodóvar film I say "one of the best that the director has.
Final Score : 93% 🍎
I'm honestly quite shocked the films of Almodóvar have so little watches here on LB because they are really passionate experiences for everyone who loves Cinema as an art form -- he keeps coming back to the process of filmmaking with playful meta montages that are as gorgeous as they are inspirational. His elaborate set designs, extravagant use of colour to convey feelings, extremely different camera choices and continuous references to all his major influences as well as his own earlier work is something that I find truly breathtaking.
In Broken Embraces he designed this elaborate melodrama around the making of one of his earlier masterpieces - Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown - in such a smart…
Broken Embraces is a movie that really encompasses everything that makes Almodóvar a great filmmaker and none of the stuff that I feel sometimes detracts from his work. Now, that isn’t to say I can’t handle or always detract points from his more provocative and deviant stuff (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! in particular is one of my favorites of his), but I’ve gotta say, I enjoy his more softhearted works. Though there are both weighty and darkly comedic moments in this film, it is anchored by a plot rooted in melodrama, with some noirish and comedy elements working wonders too. There’s something to love for everyone here. Not to mention a big part of the story plays off of one…
