Broken Embraces
2009 ‘Los abrazos rotos’ Directed by Pedro Almodóvar
Synopsis
A man writes, lives and loves in darkness. Fourteen years before, he was in a brutal car crash on the island of Lanzarote. In the accident, he not only lost his sight, he also lost Lena, the love of his life. Broken Embraces is shot in the style of a hard-boiled 40s and 50s American film noir.

Pedro, no not my dad, the Spanish one, Almodóvar, has a cheeky face. His mate, Penélope, I always thought, looked like a transmogrified duck. That's not a criticism by the way. Her breasts seem to have grown since she last got them out, whenever that was? I liked them. Perhaps she's been doing those "I must, I must, I must improve my bust!" exercises the kids at school used to go on about?
The story in this film is rather uninspired and melodramatic, occasionally humorous. It always looks pretty though and it's the directorial style that saves this film from amounting to nothing more than a hill of beans. A hill...of beans!

After a slump of a few not great movies in a row, I knew I could rely on Pedro Almodovar to give me something that I would adore. Broken Embraces is pure Almodovar in every way, and that is something I am always going to be able to get on board with. We open with Harry Caine (played by Lluis Homar), a blind writer who learns of the death of Ernesto Martel (Jose Luis Gomez), a wealthy businessman who he has some mysterious connection with. Using flashbacks, an Almodovar favorite, Caine tells a young man named Diego (Tamar Novas), the story that connects him and Ernesto -- or more specifically, the woman that connects them.
That woman is Lena (Penelope…

I'm an Almodovar fan. I don't go out of my way to watch his films but I always enjoy them. I heard less than positive things about Broken Embraces and ended up forgetting about it until I saw "The Skin I Live In", which was a terrific piece of work. If there's one thing Almodovar knows it's how to carve out an interesting story. That and sex. Broken Embraces has both. As a film it was almost the perfect companion piece to Melinda and Melinda. Both films were pretty much split in half, Broken Embraces with flashbacks, Melinda and Melinda with gimmickry. They're both about film, essentially, and the difference between comedy and tragedy. While Broken Embraces is certainly the…

Another fine collaboration between Pedro Almodóvar and muse Cruz. But it remains a tad unredeemed this time around.
I had, or at least thought I had, problems with the time jumps during the first half of the film. Because everyone more or less looked exactly the same to me whether it was 1994 or 2008. I demand different hairstyles in such cases!
It turned out it didn't matter that much so I guess it was alright. But if it wasn't of any particular significance, then why use it at all?Almodóvar's use of colors is great as always. And he finds actors with fantastic faces. But this film really misses an ending.

A blind scriptwriter's past comes back to haunt him. He must go back and re-examine all the events that lead to the present in order to be at peace with himself. Another great one by Almodovar.

Another gripping drama from Almodovar. It's only flaw is that the final third, for me, becomes unnecessarily elongated, tainting what is otherwise a brilliant piece of cinema.

Great film by Almodovar. Some great cinematography. Story was easy to follow although I wasn't sure until the end whether Harry Caine was actually blind or just faking it. Also a little hard to believe super hot women would have sex with an unattractive bald man twice their age.

Pedro Almodovar is always an interesting filmmaker, but when he teams up with Penelope Cruz he seems especially inspired. That said, their latest collaboration felt a bit more standard than usual.
Amusingly this movie starts with a sex scene, almost as if Almodovar had to reach his usual sex quota and just stuck one at the beginning.
Then it plays out almost as a crime noir, with Harry Caine's past chatching up to him. It plays with filmmaking and the love story between Harry and Lena, and Ernesto Martel's obsession for Lena.
This is a homage to the classic American film noir that takes place in Hollywood, and because of that this doesn't really feel like an Almodovar story. It's…
