I watched this movie with my sister's kids and I was expecting some silly adventure with talking animals who sporadically break into song. This isn't at all what the first act delivers; it's actually kind of violent and intense and I sort of thought the film was going to keep its focus on the human characters. Eventually, however, we do get the talking animals and all the comic hi-jinks and adventures that go along with that. And for a moment, one of them does break into song.
(The songs, by the way, are written and performed by Phil Collins, and they're terrible. I mean, at one point, he rhymes "festival" with "best of all".)
You really should see this movie…

The harmless but forgettable story of "a boy who became a man by becoming a bear," complete with hilariously maudlin Phil Collins soundtrack backed by a chorus of "This was much better when you were 11!"

This early version of Brave is a bit right on and has waaaaaayyyyy too much Phil Collins in for my liking but is not that bad in summary.

I quite enjoyed this - although couldn't stop comparing the plot of this to that of Brave. Slightly underrated Disney film.

Beautiful animation and a score from Phil Collins that is far superior to his Tarzan score, but Brother Bear lacks an extra push that would take it to greatness.

I've complained about this movie in my previous review, so I won't do so again. It's still not good, it still wants to be The Lion King, and it still features a murdering bastard of a main character who is never held responsible for his actions.
However, I watched it with a friend who loves it, and I have to admit, I had a lot more fun this time.

"‘Brother Bear’ is inhoudelijk zeker geen hoogvlieger onder de Disney-films, en ook de muziek en animatie zijn helaas middelmatig, maar de film weet toch te ontroeren en te vermaken, met leuke personages en een fijne, ongedwongen sfeer."
