Reviews of Cadillac Records 2008

I'm sad that this movie got shoved so far off most people's radar. In terms of musical biopic structure, it's pretty formulaic, but it makes up for that with a ton of heart, a ton of energy, and a veritable bounty of straight-up incredible music. Beyonce Knowles, channeling Etta James to an almost eerie degree, completely steals the show.

The story behind this movie is too big to tell in two hours but It was good to relive the heyday of Chess Records & the killer artists & songs that were on this label.

Awesome music, awesome cars.

"Messy but great film with strong performances all-around from an all-star cast: Adrien Brody, Jeffery Wright, Beyonce, Cedric The Entertainer, Mos Def, Gabrielle Union, Columbus Short & Emmanuelle Chriqui. But the three standout perfromances for me: Jeffery Wright as Muddy Waters, Mos Def as Chuck Berry & Columbus Short as Little Walter. Great, great film!!"

I've never been a fan of Ms. Knowles as an actress, but the chemistry between her and Brody in this film was pretty convincing.

Turn up your audio and enjoy the sound of rock'n'roll. Definitely worth watching more than once.

Rock’n’ roll has always been filled with colorful characters, doing things like marrying their 13-year-old cousins, building sandpits inside their houses or eating live bats onstage. Cadillac Records tell the story about Chess Records in the early 1950’s, which was one of the first labels to bring black musicians to the mainstream. The film’s lack of success is blamed on Beyoncé but I think that’s unfair criticism. I think she was ok and if you don’t like her there’s plenty other good performances, for example Mos Def and Adrian Brody.

Leonard Chess is 26. He runs a small jazz/blues club in Chicago. He meets Muddy Waters after a 'music off' that almost becomes a shooting. The club mysteriously burns down and Chess puts the insurance money into a recording studio. Howling Wolf signs and records and doesn't get on with Muddy at all. Chuck Berry signs and takes the Chess sound mainstream and makes them megabucks. Chess wants to repeat sucess with a female vocalist so finds heroin junkie Etta…
