Candy
2006 Directed by Neil Armfield
Synopsis
A poet falls in love with an art student, who gravitates to his bohemian lifestyle -- and his love of heroin. Hooked as much on one another as they are on the drug, their relationship alternates between states of oblivion, self-destruction, and despair.

Once upon a time, Dan and Candy were in love, but they were both strung out on heroin. Dan especially was a fiend. One night he comes home crazier than usual after taking too much. Candy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. Dan doesn't like that...not...one...bit. He takes the knife from her, laughing while he does it, sticks it in her mouth "Let's put a smile on that face!" He can't handle the fact he did something so horrible to Candy so he takes a razor, sticks it in his mouth, and leaves out for America bringing his scars with him. He renounces the name "Dan". Now, he's The Joker.
Why So Serious?
-
This is how a perfectly FUCKED UP marriage between Requiem For a Dream and Trainspotting would look like.
Warning! This is ultimately disturbing because there is Love and Drugs involved.
-
Not a story that makes you feel well, but it's a well told story, and there are some ray of lights in-between its misery.
The lead-duo are very convincingly delivering their brain-candy, especially Abbie.C - and even here she also has her usual eye-thinghy going for her.

By the storyline, I though this movie was just about drugs and how it affects people, but damm... I was so wrong.
This movie is all about love, don't be fooled like me!Love can be hard, tricky, dark. It's heaven, earth and hell.
When you really love someone, you stay together, no-matter-what.
Dan and Candy teaches that all along the entire movie. They are, indeed, the coolest people at McDonald's!
-
A completely heart-breaking and intense story of two addicts, looking at the extreme side-effects that drugs can have on both a relationship and the lives of the people around them. Heath Ledger is phenomenal and Abbie Cornish gives an incredible performance, too, as the two have such a powerful chemistry that you can really feel their sadness. One scene especially will tear you to pieces.

The two leads were amazing in their roles. A beautiful movie in every sense.

I found this movie one of the most emotionally intense movies I have ever seen. Perhaps that reflects the moment when I watched it since I was recovering from some personal trauma.

A movie about love story of two addicted young people. This story is not whining. As well as it didn't cross the edge of disgust, excellent balance! Of course, the theme is similar to the "Requiem ...", but here is another emphasis.

Great performance from former australian hopes.

Really depressing, particularly given the events afterward.

Some excellent acting, a good script, and overall a very effective story... however, all that being said, I'm not sure it actually did anything to set itself apart from other very good addiction dramas. The Basketball Diaries comes to mind, a movie that I know I was impressed with at the time, but have very few strong memories of today. This is solid, but it is unremarkable, and the story is such a common one that, as well as it is told here, I am sure I will not have any strong memories of a year from now.
