Captain Clegg
1962 Directed by Peter Graham Scott
Synopsis
Who knows the truth about the curse of Captain Clegg?
What secret lay behind the dreaded Marsh Phantoms, the ghostly riders whose silent approach in the darkness of the bleak, unwelcoming Romney Marshes causes men to die of fright? Are they a genuine manifestation or a cover for illegal smuggling activities. Perhaps Dr Blyss, the benign vicar of the quiet village of Dymchurch, knows the truth about the ruthless pirate and smuggler who lies buried in the village graveyard and can unravel the phenomenon of the curse of Captain Clegg.

Very fun and overlooked Hammer Film. More of a swashbuckling melodrama than a horror film, but very much worth checking out. With a great cast featuring Peter Cushing and a very young Oliver Reed.

I am sick to the pit of my stomach that I've never seen this film before.
Not a "stand out" Hammer classic but by-golly its brilliant. The visuals are impressive and the performances absolutely bloody incendiary. It gripped me from start to finish, which was a massive pain in the arse considering I'd stuck a little 80 minute "Hammer Horror" on to fall asleep to!
So now I'm doubly tired but also doubly ecstatic I caught it too.
The plot is a cat and mouse tale (fnar fnar), about smugglers and the authorities out to catch them. Think Pirates of the Caribbean... but West Country England... and more the demand side of the enterprise as opposed to the "aaarrrh me…
