Reviews of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 2005

Soy una fan de Willy Wonka <3
-
A somewhat misguided adaptation of the famous children's story that's significantly creepier (unintentionally) than its Gene Wilder predecessor.
-
One of Burton's worst movies...
-
The fuck is this.
But
I enjoy it

OK, after re-watching, I have to admit this was pretty good. I did have to set aside my prejudices towards the book & original movie. Honestly, besides the obvious awesomeness of Johnny Depp, it was the squirrels & Veruca Salt scene that tipped me over. Fantastic.

Lacks the heart and soul of original

My impression on this movie has been ambiguous since the first time I watched it. I absolutely love the scenes set outside the factory, especially the first 30 minutes or so which were focused on Charlie's family and the Golden Tickets that were being found around the world; those scenes were beautiful and exciting. At the beginning I didn't know what it was. I mean, the visual style is great as is always with Burton. But the story just didn't tell me anything. And then I read Dirk's review and I knew what it was: this film is cold and lacks a heart. That's why I didn't like this film.
I'll be watching the 1971 film soon to compare...

Depp totally ruined this movie for me. I didn't mind the first half. The setup was really good. The style of Burton comes through clearly, the family dynamic was cool, as was the kid actor playing Charlie. Sadly, after they get to Wonka factory, a creepy child molester crossed with Michael Jackson shows up. And ruins it. Depp, who usually impresses me is annoying and hard to like. Gene Wilder basically will always be Willy Wonka to me, but I…
