The latest anime from director Makoto Shinkai is arguably his most populist and accessible to date yet disappointingly it possesses many of the problems that have marred his earlier work. Although rich in folklore it is a film that is most indebted to the films of Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki, and Studio Ghibli in general, cast a wide shadow over many anime filmmakers but in Journey to Agartha, director Makoto Shinkai, takes that influence and positively revels in it. Everything from the characters to the blending of the mundane and fantastical reeks of fawning homage to the master. As an unapologetic devotee to Miyazaki I have little problem in seeing more films inspired by the director yet I found Journey to…

My second Makoto Shinkai film after '5 Centimetres Per Second'.
And I must say:
This film is excellent.I bought this at 'comic-con' a few days ago for £23 ( It was a collector's edition. They didn't have normal blu-ray). It was a large sum of money to pay, but I was willing to put faith in Shinkai and hope this anime-film was worth it. And boy, did it deliver...
'Children who chase lost voices' AKA 'Journey to Agartha' is a more accessible and child-oriented film than '5 Centimetres per Second'. However, the film still manages to maintain the mature themes of love and death that is standard for Shinkai's work, and delivers a fantastic tale similar in structure of…

Did I just watch a rejected Ghibli movie? It certainly looks that way. But the writing is so poor. Characters feel one dimensional and plot structure is a big crumbled mess. Oh and lens flare. In a fucking animated movie.

This could easily have passed for a Studio Ghibli production, which is high praise in my book! It had a lot of things that I like: a female protagonist, a hidden fantasy world, weird creatures, giant gods... A somewhat abrupt ending is the only criticism that comes to mind. This is only Makoto Shinkai's third feature film, and he already seems to have mastered the form. I'll be tracking down his prior work and keeping an eye on him from now on.

Slow start, but it gets quite good. Lots of nods to various mythologies I thought.

Wow, ilyen gyönyörűen megrajzolt/festett anime-ot se láttam mostanában a ghibliseken kívül, csodaszép volt látványra! Meg a sztori is rendben volt.

In the theme of blending mundane with fantasy: many insipid, wooden characters are made more bland when set against magnificent environments and creatures - which push the limitations of light usage within a 2D setting.

An emotionally confusing film. Beautifully animated, I can't help but feel that they wasted a lot of the emotional potential by trying to tell the story within a film rather that even a short (13 episode) series - it denies the characters the development they require.
The ending is also disappointing... you'll know what I mean.

more miyazaki-esque than shinkai's other works and unneccersarily long like most japanese animated movies.
