Cold Souls
2009 Directed by Sophie Barthes
Synopsis
A soul searching comedy.
Paul Giamatti stars as himself, agonizing over his interpretation of "Uncle Vanya." Paralyzed by anxiety, he stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by extracting souls. Giamatti enlists their service -- only to discover that his soul is the shape and size of a chickpea.

Lost In Translation meets Being John Malkovich...and just as brilliant as both. Lightly-moody, thought-provoking and comedic...an absolute masterpiece. After now seeing this...I'm shocked it isn't more well-known or revered. Terrific from beginning to end, fantastic writing and directing...and...Paul Giamatti is absolutely brilliant as usual. Watch it.

Very interesting and original film. Giamatti is incredible as always. The rest of the cast is pretty good too. Visuals are surreal. Script, while a bit clunky at moments, provides laughs, some food for thought, as well as a few poignant touches. This is a very clever, compelling, and refreshingly original film.

Paul Giamatti is good in everything. This is a blatant existential "What is my soul, really?" type of film. The "peer into the soul" shots were beautiful and mundane.

Pretensamente filosófico, desperdiça um bom ator.
Supposedly philosophical, wastes a good actor. -
Started off great then got bogged down in a lame story that didn't add anything to the movie. I liked the start though!

Uneven and probably not an effective movie as a whole, but the comedic scenes that work are fantastic.
-
bag of ideas that gets increasingly more dicidulous and too Kaufman for its own good.

Another Paul Giammati driven film that I really like. It's smart and interesting. It is too bad that Barthes hasn't done anything since.
