Now this is more like it. The latest in my attempt to watch every Arnie film. I've seen Conan a few times and it was the point where Arnie went from being a guy completely out of his element to being the centre of attention. During Conan the Barbarian we see the evolution of Arnold Schwarzenegger. From the silent muscleman to the stoic movie star. The scene where Arnie crosses the line is a good one. When asked what is best in life Conan responds thusly:
To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.
Great line, great delivery. You can see where they got the idea to cast Arnie in…

Who knew that AHNALD could make such a damn fine film so early on. This film is absolutely incredible for all action fans.

As a child Conan was kidnapped and turned into a slave after his village, and parents, were slaughtered before his eyes. After being forced to fight his bloodlust has earned his freedom and now he is on a quest to exact his revenge on the man, and the cult, that destroyed his childhood.
Great production and a visual-driven narrative elevate this minimal dialogue interpretation of Robert E. Howard's Conan tales, but not-quite-English-speaking Arnie often hams things up to a whole other level. While it's far from the best of the 'sword and sorcery' genre it's still an entertaining romp. And Arnie punches a camel out cold, so that scene alone earns Conan the Barbarian its place in film history.

Anyone else get the sense that Milius takes this shit way too seriously?

An epic movie that launches Schwarzeneger's career, I think it is underrated, a great film witha great direction

The first major leading role for Austrian bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger which would intorudce him to Hollywood and become a fan favourite.

"What daring! What outrageousness! What insolence! What arrogance!... I salute you." - King Osric
Wow, that was pretty bad. It was surprisingly dull for an Arnie film and the acting was atrocious from mostly everyone. Arnie gives off a million and one ARGHHHH's and his laughter is hilariously bad. Even the action was nothing extraordinary. But oh well, a bad Arnie film is still a (kind of) fun watch.

Coming on the heels of “Superman” and “Star Wars”, “Conan the Barbarian” introduced the mainstream moving going public to body builder Arnold Schwarzenegger. Based on the pulp stories by Robert E. Howard, “Conan” is a very well made blockbuster, filled with gore, nudity, and action. The score by Basil Poledouris is an action classic, with several themes from the score being used in future movie trailers. And you know you wrote a classic score when your cuts are used to advertise other films.
Watching the making of documentary, it took years to get this project alive and kicking. The producers hired Oliver Stone to write a useable script, something he took head on. Apparently he submitted an epic story filled… -
Conan the Barbarian may not have a lot of depth to it, but taken just as a fantasy adventure film, it’s a very solid effort. Arnold’s acting isn’t completely honed at this stage of his career, but it’s good enough that within the confines of this film, with his supporting cast bearing a lot of the weight, it adds up to an enjoyable fantasy experience. Of particular note is the film’s score, conducted by Basil Poledouris. The orchestral music permeates every scene, and is not just high quality, but also exciting and appropriate to the film; it is exactly what most people would imagine for great fantasy movie music.
