Six years in the making, Crumb is one of the most honest portrayals of an artist that I've seen in a documentary — largely due to the personality of Robert Crumb himself. He discusses his desires and motivations without shame or censorship, even when it comes to some of his more controversial content and his feelings towards women (which I suppose could be called a love/hate relationship), and the same matter-of-fact delivery extends to the members of his immediate family too. Within society Crumb seems like an outcast or deviant, but against the backdrop of his family he appears to be the most normal one in the room, with some of the saddest moments in the film relating to his…

One of my favourite documentaries. Was pleasantly surprised to see it pop up on TCM Underground. Along with Hoop Dreams and When We Were Kings, seeing this in the theatre during my impressionable mid-teens showcased to me how great documentaries can be and solidified my love for the genre.

The movie is about all 3 brothers in a way, and they are all screwed up, when you first meet Robert he seems weird, but once you meet the brothers you realize he's really well adjusted. It's interesting to see him talk with honesty about his issues with women and generally issues with the whole world, but it's near impossible to relate to any of it.

One of the best documentaries ever made. Zwigoff's exploration of Robert Crumb and his bizarre family members has left a dint in my head ever since the first time i saw it.

Those who know of and enjoy Robert Crumbs' work will probably enjoy this documentary about his life, I didn't know anything of his work, don't like what I saw through the film and couldn't separate the strangeness of his work and the tragedy of the way he and his siblings were brought up from the film itself. There was a nagging doubt as I watched the film about the participation of one of his brothers, a doubt that turns out to have been well-founded. I'm going to give the film an "I don't know" 5/10.

El retrato más auténtico y sincero que se haya visto de un artista en una pantalla de cine.

Are there sadder people than Robert Crumb and (much more so) his brothers? If not for the very explicit drawings and conversations about sex, I would suggest this should be required viewing for high schoolers.
The other two themes (beyond the dominant theme of the movie and of Crumb's art: sexual frustration/fascination/fetishism) of the movie are: feeling alienated and completely apart from most people; incredulity/repulsion by American consumerism/apathy.
Already, the more I think about this movie, the more I like it...In the early stages of processing, three scenes worthy of consideration:
1. Depiction of Crumb's drawings of attractive, young, successful people enjoying meals, socializing, making plans; voiceover filled with animosity.
2. Interviewer tells Crumb how effected she was as… -

Totally earns the credit of "Produced by David Lynch".

Strange but interesting.

One of the best, most involving movies I've ever seen, or could ever hope to see. The only complaint I can think of is that it wasn't nearly long enough.
