Jacques Tourneur’s tale of black magic and an avenging arcangel isn’t quite as well done as his early films for Lewton, but it’s a great horror piece nonetheless, featuring the most impressive creature effects of the 1950s—the demon which haunts Dana Andrews is brilliantly conceived and undeniably unsettling, swooping down on his victim from puffs of smoke. The film is perhaps a touch slow in the dialogue scenes, which on occasion seem padded and plodding, but it’s a minor complaint.
