Hadn't seen this since it came out - hated it back then but compared to Argento's Dracula, it's up there with Deep Red and Suspiria by comparison.
Okay, it's not, but it's far better than I remember despite having some awful effects shots and a central premise that revolves around the revenge of a man who was abandoned as a baby and reared by rats. Yes, rats. It's not a great film but there's enough of Argento's batty flourishes (completely removed from his stab at Dracula, sadly) and a wonderful, melancholy score by the maestro Morricone.

99 minutesI have had this on my Netflix queue ever since I started adding Giallo's to my watchlist, and it happens to be leaving Netflix intant in a few days so I decided to knock it off.
Although this is directed by Dario Argento, I don't really know if it's considered a real Giallo. But it sure seemed to be, with the typical over exaggerated gore and creepy tension you feel while watching it. I also have never seen any version of the Phantom of the Opera, even though it's a classic from what I hear/ I'll have to check out the original since this is kind of an unorthodox take on…

Bad, really really bad. It is near inconceivable that this is from the same skilled artisan as.Tenabrae
-
A dull and dramaless slog that lacks any level of suspense.
The Reverence: A rat catching mobile beats out post sex rat sex and the paedophiles with their chocolate.

Argento doesn't seem to know if he wants to make a horror or a comedy (or even a mix of the two!) and because of that, this movie never finds it's tone. Dario doesn't seem to give his actors any direction here at all; Asia tends to be fine in his movies, here she is like a lost puppy, without a clue as what to do.

Dario, I love your films and everyone deserves to drop the ball now and again, but on this occasion……No.

Argento takes on some truly stellar adaptations in directing his own 'Phantom of the Opera', but the result is so off-beat and unexpected, and marked with his own unique style (not least of all being the addition of telepathic rats) and grandiose, baroque visuals making Argento's Phantom a visually sumptuous filmic oddity for any who believe that there can be no 'definitive' telling of a story.
