Snyder gets a lot of shit for his needle drops (usually deserved) but that Richard Cheese one is still incredible
Unrated Director's Cut!
Having seen both films there is absolutely no question as to which film was the best! The one and only George A. Romero's Cult Classic Dawn of the Dead!
With that being said! Zack Snyder created a very good ACTION zombie film! Being his first feature film he showed great promise as a new director! It definitely had some very disturbing and gruesome scenes to be sure! It's entertaining and fast paced! Enjoy it for what it is there is nothing wrong with that! Within the first few minutes of the film was what I consider the best of what this film had to offer! And it was an incredibly frightening scene!
But I have to say…
Mean, antic, messy, cheeky, and hopeless. In many ways the opposite of the stately, painterly efforts at adrenalized, masculine fauxetry that would become Snyder’s hallmark. Hard not to think of how different and perhaps better his work would have been if he could have retained James Gunn, with all his body horror and slapstick impulses, as his screenwriter through the DC films. This is a plain ole good zombie movie, and that isn’t easy.
Remakes are a fickle thing and I usually really don't like them. This isn't so much a remake as a cover, an interpretation of a genre classic transported to a modern setting. And that's the main reason why I don't really mind this and actually found it rather entertaining.
Romero's original was, apart from being a full fledged zombie horror fest, a social critique on commercialisation and capitalism. It commented on these things through dialogue, but mostly through its symbolic setting, the epicentre of commercialism the mall. It has a certain contemplative quality to it that makes it so much different from other films and has earned it its classic status. It is also the second part of a three…
ahhhh the good old days when Zack Snyder was still sane and still hasn’t discovered those masterfully atrocious Canon Dream Lenses.
Tag yourself: I'm that idiot girl who's like, 'Fuck the zombies, I'm going after Chips the dog.'
Carnage and futility— some of Snyder’s strongest work, really impressed by how well this still holds up.
Oh. Zack. You're fine, but you're simple.
I completely forgot this was written by James Gunn and featured respected realtor Phil Dunphy.
The second I saw that child in the first five minutes I was like "Snyder is gonna kill it". Bingo.
I don't know why I chose to eat during this 😓🤢🤮
Oh how I love this movie.
I put this on in the background while I took care of some work stuff but ended up forgetting about doing work and got lost in this. It’s been awhile since I had seen this, I remember watching this weekly when it first came out on DVD.
That opening scene is just amazing, it gets your attention and doesn’t let up.
Also the soundtrack is just perfect. Johnny Cash to start, Richard Cheese’s cover of Down With The Sickness and then ending with Disturbed. All are great and fit the movie and scenes wonderfully. Oh and if you haven’t checked out Richard Cheese’s other covers go do it.
Anyways I really like this movie and this is definitely one of my top zombie movies. This is what really got me into the genre, it’s too bad they’ve had to overdo it with all the zombie shows/films.
