Detektiv Down
I was watching this in bed before falling asleep, breaking up the watch. Had ten minutes to go when I got incredibly sick, then the holidays hit, then I just didn't want to go back.
The tone is bizarre. There's moments where it goes for hardboiled, the detective knocking back whiskeys at a strip club. Then it's about the discrimination against our main detective with down syndrome--he gets out of the strip club because the stripper doesn't like the way he looks. Then it's just depressing about how lonely it is. In between that it wants to also be quirky and funny.
There's a movie where all that fits, and maybe it's one where the mystery felt like it mattered.…

Look, I’m just going to level with you: we watched this movie because we really wanted to know how you pull something like this off without being ridiculously offensive. I guess the core concept is offensive/exploitative but if you’re gonna do it I think this movie did it in as respectful a way as possible? I dunno. To its credit it played it very straight with a decent whodunit and a few funny gags.
A centimetre to one side and it would've been exploitative. A centimetre to the other and it would've been sappy. But, it managed to nail just the right level of funny and heart warming.
Its been a loooooong time since we've all talked about watching this and we finally bit the bullet! I think I had this a little too hyped and got a tin bit disappointed with it. Even though it its a lean 84 minutes it still felt a little long. I got lost in what was happening in the story a few times but I'm gonna chalk some of that to the weird subtitles we had.
The noir aspect was alright although the music was dope. There were some shots that had some cool lighting. I thought the protagonist was pretty good and gelled well with some of the other characters. There were definitely moments that were silly and really funny.
Wasnt a bad watch. Im happy to finally knock it off the watchlist.
There was a lot of potential for exploitation from a movie that cast a young man with Down's Syndrome, Myhre, as a fledgling private detective with Down's Syndrome. But to his credit, director Breine does a rather good job of not using it as a crutch or a cheap joke. He paid a lot of respect to his lead and told the noir-ish story straight. Other characters acknowledge the disease but it fits well contextually within the story as the young man, on his first big case, investigates the disappearance of the patriarch of an odd family. The story is a bit of let down if I'm being honest but things really do pick up a bit in the last 20 or so minutes and I'd be lying if I said I didn't find myself smiling at the end.
Detective Downs is another Norwegian film that doesn't quite manage to live up to its potential. Being one of, probably, few films to feature a man with down syndrome as the main lead in a film noir detective comedy. The film manages to walk a very thin line between ridiculing the lead actor having down syndrome and embracing his difference with love and affection. In doing so, they have created a film with a few humorous and heartfelt moments without ever becoming nasty. The problem with the film lies however with the story. It's not very interesting, nor does it give the lead too many opportunities to properly shine. What should have become an unforgettable film becomes too mundane and easily forgotten.
Robert is a detective who solves crimes via emotion and feelings, so it should come as no surprise that the movie manages some emotion of its own. It's a simple film to be sure, but the laughs and warmth give it a depth all its own.
And yes, I do demand that this be the beginning of a franchise.
