Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Synopsis
Nice guys finish last. Meet the winners.
Lawrence and Freddie are con-men; big-time and small time respectively. They unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this town (on the French Mediterranean coast) aint big enough for the two of them. They agree to a "loser leaves" bet. The bet brings out the best/worse in the two.

Would anyone believe I saw this at the cinema at the age of 7 by accident when the universal flop Mac And Me must have had its only ever sold out screening? Probably one of the best lucky breaks I ever had.

A film that remains fun after repeated viewings, and even after we know exactly where all of the cons are headed.
It's a treat to watch two geniuses battle each other head-on like this, with Frank Oz doing a typically nice job at the helm. It's not a fantastic comedy, but it's very good, and although both Martin and Caine have done better, these "Scoundrels" are a fun watch.
Also, Glenne Headley nearly steals the show. That's something of a miracle considering she was just a beginner then and on screen with two masters of their craft.

Well-known actors, who instead of spending money on girls, themselves scrounge off them. In the last few weeks I've decided I adore older movies, from 80's or even earlier.

Classic comedy with Steve Martin and Michael Caine both on excellent form...

Lawrence (Caine) is a suave and sophisticated con-artist who works the French Riviera conning wealthy women. When Freddy (Martin) an uncultured con-artist arrives on the scene he stands to blow Lawrence's cover. Unable to come to a truce the two make a bet to be the first to con $50,000 out of a visiting American heiress, the loser leaves town and the winner gets to stay.
The pairing of Steve Martin and Michael Caine is a preposterous thought and unlikely combination but the end result is comedy genius. Caine plays the stiff upper lip Brit to Martin's American boorish rouge allowing the two to feed beautifully off of each other with each bringing their own style of comedy. Martin is…

This film is smart and silly at the same time. Michael Caine plays the dapper playboy very well against Steve Martin's brash youth.

Directed by Frank Oz and starring Michael Caine, Steve Martin and Glenne Headly, this is a charming, witty and constantly funny comedy.
Freddy (Martin) and Lawrence (Caine) are both con men that are competing to con an American “Soap Queen” Janet Colgate (Glenne Headly) out of $50,000. Lawrence is a suave, British gentleman who believes in conning corrupt, rich people out of their money so he can spend it on culture and a lavish lifestyle.
Freddy is a loud, over-confident American who is an up and coming con man that wants to con anyone out of money so he can spend it all on his own enjoyment. It all takes place in the beautiful French Riviera where Lawrence teaches Freddy…

This must be a good way to start the journey through 30 countries. An american movie with Michael Caine playing a guy from Lichtenstein, the french actor Aïna Walle as a danish lady.. the list goes on. All set in the beauttiful french rivera. This is a wild race between scoundrels, the wannabe played by Steve Martin.. and then of course Michael Caine as the fake freedom fighter. A bet is placed between the scoundrels to trick 50.000 dollars from the soapqueen Janet Golgate, placed by Glenne Headley. The race is on, who is tricked or not and by whom? You have probably seen better comedies.. but perhaps not as charming as "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"

I only caught the last 20 minutes or so today on HBO but I'm gonna have to watch the whole thing sometime soon. This is one of my favorite comedy movies ever! Michael Caine and Steve Martin are great as a pair of con men in two of their best roles. It's up there with What About Bob and Bowfinger among Frank Oz's best directorial works.
