I had looked forward to watching Do Not Disturb mainly because I really like François Cluzet in just about anything he does. Having not seen the original Humpday I can't really speak to any comparison, but the overall story seemed a bit unsure of what it was going to do. Was it going full comedy, was it drama, and it ended up being some of both, but never seemed to fulfill any of its choices completely.
Having said that, the cast goes quite a ways to compensate for what it lacks in the writing department and it can be nicely filed under enjoyable yet unremarkable French cinema that nevertheless always deserves to be seen.
For a minute, I thought this remake was a good idea. Maybe a French re-telling of Lynn Shelton's mumblecore classic was a way to expand the original concept into a sexier, smarter approach. Oh, how wrong I was.
Yvan Attal doesn't have Shelton's wit or sardonic humor, so we get this into a soulless tale of toxic masculinity, heteronormative clichés, and uninspired performances.
Avoid.
