1994 Directed by Woody Allen
Synopsis
Somewhere behind the early 1960s cold-war iron curtain, the Hollander family cause an international spying incident when Walter photographs a sunset in a sensitive region. One of Woody's amusing little stories that somehow got lost under the collapse of the Soviet Union. It felt more like the play it is and I spent a fair amount of time laughing my way through it. I was glad to see Michael J Fox getting a shot at a Woody script. He faired well. Mistaken identity, the extreme absurdity of New York Jews, and Dom Deluise are the main drivers here and it all comes together pretty well.
I still can't get the image of Woody with the little piece of felt under his pillow out of my head.
Your life won't be any worse for having missed this one, but if you think Woody's funny then check it out.

I am now all caught up with Woody Allen movies minus his new one that came out in theaters a couple of months ago and his very first one What's Up tiger Lily which I have tried to watch but could not get into.
Don't Drink the Water is extremely funny and everything that happens in the movie will make you laugh with just how silly it is and it is nice that in the 90s that Woody Allen was able to branch out some and make something broader than his love comedies which he made a bunch of in the mid 90s. This film has everything that you can expect of from a film of this stance. It has… -
Woody Allen spinning his wheels. Fairly pedestrian effort with some laughs to be had. I had to watch it though, because now I'm just 3 films off having seen his whole filmography.

I cant expect much from a TV movie that seems to be a conversion from a play but Allen still delivers on certain levels. His character seems to be the first development of his unsophisticated schlep archetype that he'd later reprise in small time crooks. Allen is at his most annoying here but its good for a few laughs. Mayim Bialick looks absolutely radiant in this film and its crazy how frumpy she got between this picture and the big bang theory. All and all a decent flick thats better than most out there but not up to Woodys standards.

Woody's Cold War satire is overwrought, overwritten, and ultimately, underwhelming.

The romantic subplot is incredibly weak and some of the characters are just annoying, but there's a constant flow of belly laughs and the kind of fine dialogical humour Woody does so well. Fox is great fun to watch and Allen himself is his typically hilarious neurotic self. It's very very very far indeed from his best work, but it's still a fine way to wile away the day.

Rubbish, stagey, and dated. Only redeeming factors are the always-fantastic Michael J. Fox and his energy (I never knew he was in a Woody Allen film, now I know why), and Blossom's Mayim Bialik.
