Reviews of Dr. Phibes Rises Again 1972

More diabolical murders as Phibes tries to resurrect his beloved wife.

Holy shit, I love this film! It's all over the place in a wonderful way, from the two bumbling cops. that I am pretty sure are a couple, to the Saw-like scorpion trap and the way Vincent Price pronounces "Victoria", this movie is just delightful.
His assistant, Vulnavia isn't bad on the eyes, which is good as she is strictly there for eye candy and for someone for Dr. Phibes to talk to, otherwise he would just look crazy, right?
The colors, the sets, the random bits of British comedy interspersed throughout. It's just a good time.

This sequel is an entertaining film, but it's not up to the level of the first one. Vincent Price fans will still want to see it, and so will fans of gruesome murder movies. But most people probably won’t mind missing it. Read full review.

This one didn't quite sit with me as well as the first one.

Just as bizarre but even campier sequel to The Abominable Dr. Phibes. Strange early 70's fun that passes the time inoffensively.

Released just a year after The Abominable Dr. Phibes, this adequately amusing sequel transports the action to Egypt as Phibes races a boorish explorer to the fabled "river of life" which runs below a pharaoh's tomb every 2,000 years. The elixir of life that Phibes pursues is, of course, a MacGuffin, an excuse for Vincent Price to don a series of ridiculous disguises and cackle with glee as his victims die in the most convoluted possible ways. Price's joy is…

thanks to the B-Movie Cast for recommending this!
it's really strange - but fun! -
This sequel ignores the first film's finale and puts Phibes family on a boat to Egypt to find a River of Life, where the’yre pitted against a rival (Robert Quarry) who has his own longevity plans in mind. It’s a more straight-forward film, minimizing the ultracamp tone of the original, but that’s probably because it’s not as well made. Also, the deaths seem a little tamer this time out, and the comedy is more obvious, such as the two policemen, who are turned into Oliver and Hardy-like buffoons.

Director Fuest was fairly cock-blocked by AIP from displaying the humor that made The Abominable Dr. Phibes such a delightful movie; the result is a tepid bore of a body count flick with no real tension.
