Going into this, I didn't know this would be a musical. I thought it would just be a straight up drama with some singing in between. I really only saw this to see Eddie Murphy turn in his first dramatic performance and aside from that, there isn't much to this.
Let's get the positives out of the way first. The acting is good, for the most part. The main standouts are Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy especially is surprisingly excellent and deserved every award he got for this film and more (he deserved the Oscar if you ask me). He shows us a part of him that we've never seen in his career. I don't know if it's…

This is the worst musical I have seen since 'Grease 2'. The story is dull and uninspiring, the songs are completely forgettable and it can't decide if it is a musical or a movie with song performances. Eddie Murphy sleepwalks throughout and was nominated for an Academy Award?! He was better as Donkey in 'Shrek'.
The worst by far was Jennifer Hudson. I have never seen a more vile actress. She over-sings everything to the point that she is trying to inhale the world's air supply. This is called singing? Her independant black woman attitude makes you want her to bite the curb. Her haughty attitude that she should be the lead singer because she has a more powerful voice…

So…the movie itself was okay. I don’t think it was put together the best, parts of the story could have used more development. I mark it worth seeing, however, and would continue to do so even if it was a 10 minute movie that just featured Jennifer Hudson singing “You’re Gonna Love Me”. That was stunning and well-worth the price of admission in itself.
As I watched the movie, I was thinking about the fact that doing this movie was a pretty ballsy move for Beyonce. Now, I cannot stand most any noise that comes out of Beyonce’s mouth, I find her music since starting her solo career horribly annoying. But I can’t help but respect her being willing to…

Yes, I finally caught up with Dreamgirls six years after its insane amount of mostly unfulfilled Oscar buzz. The verdict? It was alright. Bill Condon is a very skilled director, and his stylistic energy goes a long way in carrying what is kind of a dramatically-inert story. Spanning two decades and being comprised mostly of extended musical numbers, the film has minimal time to simply let its characters interact and is forced to rely on montages and performances to illustrate their individual subplots and arcs; unfortunately, the montages grow to be repetitive and the performances are a mixed bag.
Sure, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" is memorable and Jennifer Hudson sings it wonderfully, but her actual acting…

Glitzy and sparkly as all hell. And big points to it for that. The performances are pretty great and as much as I hate musical numbers in my movies, there are some truly outstanding ones here. There are a couple of clunkers too, but for the most part this thing shines. ESPECIALLY Jennifer Hudson.
Eddie Murphy seemed to not have learned his lesson. Stick with this kind of material Mr. Murphy and people will love you again.

Dreamgirls is a musical film based on the Broadway musical. It's a fictional story loosely based on the career of Diana Ross and The Supremes. It stars Beyoncé Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy.
This is an incredibly lavish, bold and well produced musical. The song numbers (which there are plenty of) are larger than life - bold, powerful, exploding with primary colors and in your face. This is definitely not a biopic or a drama, it's clearly a musical with a few dramatic scenes to interconnect the song numbers. And there are plenty of "songspeak" numbers as well, where characters will use songs or break into singing to let people know how they're feeling.

That singing-conversation-thing was pretty annoying.
But Eddy Murphys hairdo in the first part comforted me over that. -

Another old blog post
Bill Condon (I bet he got ribbed at school - okay, that was uncalled for) has done it again; he has taken a successful stage musical and turned it into a successful movie musical. Hoorah. Sorta.
If Dreamgirls isn't as successful as Chicago before it ,much of the fault lies with the musical itself. Yes, some of the performances could have been toned down just a touch - Jennifer Hudson belting out her torchsong at the end of what I suppose would have been the first act borders on laughable as she hoofs around the stage hysterically screaming to herself - but on the whole the film has the right look and feel. It is just…

Yeah, it's not great, but it's entertaining, and features some excellent singing from all involved. But quality filmmaking it is not.

Good voices, good songs, ok story

I may sound bias as I have a thing for musicals but this movie is just so great. In my eyes Beyonce can do no wrong and she has definitely done no wrong here. There are so many talented actors/performers in this. Jaimie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and loads more. And they all play such intriguing characters. The story line keeps you entertained and if that's not enough the songs are awesome. Brilliant. One I can watch again and again. I'd recommend to anyone.
