Jarrod: It's time to pay the piper. He's gonna reap what he sowed, and it sure ain't corn ... or wheat.

Just what the hell is wrong with Jarrod? More pressingly, what the hell is wrong with Lily?
There are two massive flaws in this film which really turned me off from what is an otherwise funny, fairly touching (outside of the central relationship) and whimsical comedy.
The first is that nobody in their right mind (in fact, nobody not in their right mind) would ever want to date Jarrod. He is horrible. I cannot remember an instance in this movie where he shows some kind of redeeming feature, but just to list a few of his negative points:
- He is a compulsive liar.
- He is a sexist.
- He has a massive inferiority complex.
- He is an… -
My favourite film by Taika Waititi. Gentle, funny and laugh out loud hilarious in parts. Quotable. Plays a little too much on the awkwardness of the main characters, but that is what it's about.

This one has been on my radar for a few years now, and I finally streamed it from HuluPlus just now. Loren Horsley looks at times like Judy Greer and in other shots like Hugh Laurie in drag. They really ought to be more careful about photographing her. I really enjoyed her sweet performance here, but the rest of it...I dunno. The part of me that loves Ghost World kinda likes it but I just never really liked Jared as a character enough that I wanted Lily to like him.
Also, I think I'm really burned out on the use of slow, acoustic song montages in indie films. It's like there's a Wes Anderson Emulation Clause in the contract for…

If Letterboxd had been around several years ago when I first watched this film, I would have given it five stars. Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords, some solid tunes, and an awkward underdog romance? What could be better?
Fast forward to April 19th, 2013. I decided to watch this again because I couldn't remember much about except for that I loved it. I watched the first 30 minutes in anticipation and suddenly found myself growing more and more disappointed as the movie progressed. This definitely wasn't the film I remembered it to be. What was once an adorably awkward love story was actually a really sad story about a desperate girl blind to the unforgivable flaws of a…

Nothing like Napoleon Dynamite. That was annoying and unfunny with a lead character I had no interest in. This is the reverse: funny, warm and an almost hypnotic lead character in Lily. I repeat much, much better than the over-appreciated Napoleon Dynamite.

A flick about 2 awkward kiwis falling in love, really just made me feel awkward. It's not a bad movie or anything, but I just didn't enjoy it all that much.
Give me a feature length Flight of the Conchords movie any day though.

not a syfy special but a quirky indie-comedy.
draws a very many comparisons to Napoleon Dynamite due to it's awkward, disillusioned protagonists but this is better. much better.
charming, heart-warming, and funnier than it has any right to be. this is a gem of a film
