Very good underworld crime film with a great performance by Joel Kinnaman. Looking forward to the sequel but not the American remake.

It's not exactly Pusher. You might as well wait for the Zac Efron remake. Because nothing says "gangster" like a bloke who stopped aging at 17.

Fine, I guess, although it's one of those thrillers that seems complicated until you realize it's actually painfully simple. Also, dumbest student ever. ("I'll just embroil myself in the drug business so I can continue bro'ing down with rich assholes." BAD IDEA JEANS.)
-
Good performances all around, though the lead is a little flat at times. Nicely shot but overall there is nothing new to be found at all. Also, it's not good when you're more invested in both of the supporting character's stories than the main guy's story. Oh well..

Undoubtedly well crafted, but it’s attempt to simultaneously revolve around three protagonists really drags the film along and makes it hard to appreciate anything about the film beyond style.

Really solid thriller with some excellent performances and a real attention to character. Bit of Inarritu here, bit of Audiard there. Espinosa's calling card - shame he went to make the awful Safe House for his Hollywood debut.

Love this movie. Here's my recent review:

Tries to do a lot at once, and sadly none of it really works -- not the woefully undeveloped main underworld story, not the varied and sundry attempts at pathos, and not the protagonist's sad saga of envy and ambition, though the latter comes the closest. (I liked the efficient way the film limns his desire to fit in with his wealthy classmates -- e.g. sewing a new button onto his dress shirt -- though the "stick to your own kind" rebuke is probably a bit much.) Nothing really registers and the movie is kind of a drag at two hours.

It's always strange seeing foreign actors who you first "met" in American productions performing in their native tongue.
Joel Kinnaman does good work here as a nobody seduced by the high life into committing criminal acts. He gets mixed up with an eclectic group of criminals and sets out on a course headed towards disaster, and while there's nothing new here the characters are engaging enough to keep you from turning it off before the end credits.
And director Daniel Espinosa shows why he was tapped to helm SAFE HOUSE as he has a solid grip on both action sequences and the quieter moments.

Joel Kinnaman is perfection here, expertly cast. A sharp, well-shot crime drama.

This movie aims to be a Swedish Scorsese gangster film, but can't quite cohere. The grating faux gritty realism, heightened by its kinetic editing can't shake away the syrupy sentimentality. Hey, but Joel Kinnaman is nice to look at, so that's something to look forward to in the sequels.
