As a general rule of thumb I don’t much care for Christmas films. Sure, I love Die Hard but that is a film I can easily enjoy all year round, but saccharine-filled films about the festive holidays? No thanks. However, there are two exceptions that have become staples of my Yuletide movie diet, one of which is Jon Favreau’s, Elf. Elf, if the title didn’t give it away, centres on a very special and unique elf. As a young orphaned baby, Buddy, crawls into Santa’s sack and finds himself magicked away to the North Pole. Adopted by a childless elf (wonderfully played by Bob Newhart), Buddy becomes one of Santa’s helpers despite being twice the size of all the proper…

National Letterboxd’s Christmas Vacation 2012I passed through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and then I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel.
-BuddyModern Christmas films come and go with little new to offer before they are forgotten or until you're forced to watch them again because the child of the house found one on a tv channel that was too cheap to get one of the good Xmas films to air and you're forced to relive the likes of Jack Frost. Every few years though, you'll get something new that's worth watching with lasting appeal like Elf.
Jon Favreau's feature film directorial debut, Made, was a critical…

Was allowed the opportunity to watch this with a bunch of child-at-heart, burned-out 20-something cynics. This movie captures the irony of being one of these out-of-your-element, lost losers, as well as being one of the best Christmas films for kids filled with sincerity and laughs.

Buddy: This place reminds me of Santa's Workshop! Except it smells like mushrooms and everyone looks like they want to hurt me.
Will Ferrell is Buddy a human raised as a elf, who after causing a few problems at santa's workshop is sent to New york to find his real Father ( James Caan). Elf is a absolute to joy to watch with Ferrell in one of his best roles (along with Anchorman of course!) and a good supporting cast: Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen & Edward Asner as Santa. A Festive Favourite.

Will Ferrel once again basically plays a dumbass, but here he's more of a lovable dumbass. Funny and touching Christmas film made better by an appearance by Peter "The Imp Pimp" Dinklage.

Since its release in 2003, Jon Favreau's "Elf" has developed into a Christmas season classic and rightfully so. Funny, warm, and earnest, but with a sly sense of humor that adds a slight edge to the proceedings, "Elf" is not a sappy, over-sweet confection. Instead, it is a winning, snappy gem with a big heart and a wink for its audience.

The ending is hokey and that whole Christmas spirit stuff is probably going to irritate the hell out of the curmudgeons and Scrooges in the crowd, but the overall energy and humour of Elf should put smiles on most faces.

It's really hard to make a modern Christmas movie that feels like it will stand the test of time, but I feel like Will Ferrell and Jon Favreau pulled it off here. It has some issues, but overall it's very funny and it has a great big heart, and it's that heart that really makes the film work and endure. I really think this one will be looked upon as a Christmas classic.

Elf is about an hour and a half long, and that’s about the right length. Any more than that, and the energetic Buddy would switch from charming to irritating. Although I enjoyed Elf, it’s probably not a film I’m going to re-watch often; but it’d be all right as background noise while wrapping presents or decorating a tree. And I think kids would love it. Kids are, de facto, the target audience for Christmas movies, and Buddy is really just a big kid. Most of the humor is aimed right at their level. Read full review.

Compulsory Christmas viewing.

To me, it will go down in history as one of the best Holidays movies ever! Will Ferrell is bombastic in this movie. One of his best roles, if not his best.

I love Will Ferrell & Zooey Deschanel is really cute in this. And can SING! I mean, really, she's awesome in that song!

What's your favorite color? A great film to watch around the holidays.

2.0/10
I was totally unable to find the charm and wit that most critics and moviegoers seem to find in this Christmas family comedy. In fact, I found most of the film to be very annoying and stupid, and Will Ferrell's performance above everything else was nearly unbearable to watch for me.
