Enchanted
2007 Directed by Kevin Lima
Synopsis
This fairytale princess is about to meet a real Prince Charming
The beautiful princess Giselle is banished by an evil queen from her magical, musical animated land and finds herself in the gritty reality of the streets of modern-day Manhattan. Shocked by this strange new environment that doesn't operate on a "happily ever after" basis, Giselle is now adrift in a chaotic world badly in need of enchantment. But when Giselle begins to fall in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer who has come to her aid - even though she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale prince back home - she has to wonder: Can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world?

I really, really liked this one.

I had no idea I was going to laugh this much. Perfect satire on the animated kids film format.

This is lovely, a superb subversion of Disney's princess films, by Disney. Amy Adams is the redheaded cartoon heroine kicked into the live-action world - and modern-day New York - by evil witch/Queen/potential stepmother Susan Sarandon. She's followed by conceited beau James Marsden, but finds herself falling instead for divorce lawyer and single parent Patrick Dempsey. Villainous, snivelling Timothy Spall also turns up every so often, mugging like a low-rent Charles Laughton. It's a funny, charming and surprisingly sharp movie, with winning performances from Dempsey and - particularly - the beguiling Adams, and two brilliant musical set-pieces. The second is a giant, meticulously-choreographed production number in a park, while the first (and best) sees her cleaning an apartment with the…

I'm a 21year old guy that loves full on action movies and anything manly. And I unashamedly loved Enchanted. It's one of those I can see myself putting on after a bad day and immediately cheering me up.

It's satirizing of Disney's own princess movies is terrific. Amy Adams is lovely and the film really works in story, music and humor. Way more of a success than it should have been.

Disney sends up its own princess oeuvre with this comic adventure.

ENCHANTED's best trait is its self-awareness. With its tongue in cheek and heart on its sleeve, it addresses my criticism of classics like SLEEPING BEAUTY; the idea of a prince and princess randomly meeting and falling in love on the spot. Not great but fun for all.

A tongue-in-cheek, perfectly cheesy Disney romance. This movie is great to watch with companions who will point out the ridiculousness of the plot and characters but enjoy at the same time. All the actors did quite a good job and it's nice to see a princess change into an ordinary but still extraordinary woman.

Disney makes fun of itself ruthlessly here, and it works so, so well, possibly entirely thanks to Amy Adams' sincere performance as Princess Giselle.

Enchanted is a film I liked but could not love. It over-delivers on sweetness, and by doing so, it under-delivers on its premise. The idea is a good one, and I enjoyed the many references to Disney princess movie motifs and clichés. I enjoy a film that is self-aware, and Enchanted very much was.
And yet, I just couldn't get completely swept up in it. It was funny, but not funny enough; clever, but not clever enough. I kept waiting for it to shift into high-gear, but it sort of coasted through its runtime, and even slowed down there at the end.
Amy Adams is wonderful, but I think she overdoes it here. I know what she's trying to do,…

Still entertaining even upon rewatch. Most of the cast were so brilliant in their roles, it's funny to see Patrick Dempsey get drowned out and overpowered by everyone else. James Marden was barely on screen and even he was more memorable than Dempsey, who could have been replaced by anyone and it probably would have been just the same (or better).
Amy Adams, on the other hand so perfectly inhabited her role, becoming the real life embodiment of the essence of every Disney princess ever that it's just pretty amazing to see.
Well-written and with a soundtrack that's light and cheerful, this film is just a lot of fun.

"Right. The steel beast is dead, peasants! I've set you all free!" James Marsden is brill in this as Edward. Amy good as the dizzy princess, Spall excellent as always, Dempsey so so, but Sarandon looks super hot!
