I haven't watched NGE in a while, and to be honest I don't really remember it that well, so I can't really compare this to the series. What I can tell you though is that Evangelion: 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone covers the first six episodes of NGE, has the same awesome soundtrack, and it seems like they made Shinji less of a pussy, which is a great thing!
Eva 1.0 perfectly blends the 90's style animation of NGE with modern quality animations, making this one of the best looking anime ever in my opinion. Every scene just looks beautiful, and the action sequences are so bad ass. The story is well written but doesn't go that deep since this is only the first out four movies in the "Rebuild of Evangelion" series.
Overall I recommend this to both newcomers and fans of the series. Everyone Should (Not) Miss Out on this great film!

Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone revisits Episodes 1-6 of Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion, the acclaimed media franchise which follows the paramilitary organization NERV and its battle against the Angels which threaten to end the world.
Things unfold differently yet remains faithful to the original series, in my opinion it's a welcome change, though they've made a few changes here and there it's actually more accessible for those unfamiliar with the series.
As a fan of Evangelion, I found it very refreshing to watch, updating the story and animation which I loved so much and making it bigger, Evangelion has never looked or sounded better. -
I rewrote this review so it made more sense. This is the Rebuild Edition of the review (as I always wanted the review to be).
Remember when Neon Genesis: Evangelion came out and everyone was upset at the finale and creator Hideaki Anno went out and strongly defended it as his vision for the series as he always wanted it to be and tough shit to anyone who didn't like it?
Then remember how there was a new movie made as the real ending (the ending "as he always wanted it to be") prequeled by a new super-short Special Edition cut of the series ("as he always wanted it to be") that was itself later recut and re-released "as he…

An explosion of colours and bombs, loud noises, annoying kids and big robots left an otherwise ordinary impression on this movie and the first half of the evangelion series.
-
Big robots and whiny kids recap about the first half of the tv series. Better pacing and animation but ultimately just something that had to be made before things could really take off...
-
Brilliantly directed and animated, this film is fast-paced, action-packed, and mystical.

I had been putting it off for a while, since you have to be in the right mood to watch classics for the first time. Like with The Godfather, I guess the right time was at dawn. Perhaps because it is at dawn that the real world with its mundane problems seems so far removed; it is definitely an "unreal" time.
There is definitely something unreal about this movie. It seems "complete", a whole which can't be decomposed into parts. Beneath the surface, beneath the slight gestures of the characters, the colors of the shadows and the sky, the gorgeous camera angles, there is some sort of... entrenched sense of symbolism felt. It embodies what I really love about Japanese…

A brilliant retell (and condensation) of the first quarter or so of the original series. It applies a new paint of coat and changes some of the furniture but the bones are very much the same. Spoiler alert: much better than the films to follow.

I don't remember much from the TV series unfortunately so I can't really compare. The movie is good however, and the visuals are compelling. Unfortunately, the main character Shinji just seems like a whiney baby the entire time and that kind of detracts from the story. Also, it's probably purposeful that not a lot of background is given, but that might annoy viewers who are new to Evangelion.
