When I hear the name Ridley Scott, I have a image of Blade Runner in my mind with the atmosphere of Alien and the epicness of Gladiator.
But for the last few years Ridley Scott has lost his way in the imagery of movies. His recent movies are a visual treat but when we think of the content he is presenting it isn't what he was showing 10 years back.
Exodus Gods and Kings is a story about Humans and God. How the human considered themselves god and above all. And how one God tends to show his power with the help of Moses who I thought through this movie was just an messenger free the people who have been…
it's clear what interests Ridley, or at least feels different--the first 30 mins at Egyptian court actually have some juice--but boy does this get sluggish as it yadda yaddas the Haggadah.
for an actor I like, Bale has a lot of star vehicles that's just him with a beard grumbling at folks
technically only the second most boring movie called EXODUS. wants very much to be KINGDOM OF HEAVEN crossed with 2012 but is both insufficiently thoughtful and insufficiently bonkers. a whitewashed cast is the least of its problems.
Going into Exodus: Gods and Kings my only hope is that it would be better than The Counselor. Thankfully it was, but that's not saying much because The Counselor was awful.
This film nearly had me counting sheep. ZzZzZzZzZzZ
Ridley Scott. Ridley. Fucking. Scott.
I mean just look at all the crazy shit he's covered in his career. I am beyond impressed with his body of work, and he definitely wows me in many ways with his latest, "Exodus: Gods and Kings".
I can't tell you how incredible the shots in this movie are. The battle scenes are some of the best I've ever seen. EXTRAORDINARY. They were so good that I wanted all of them to last longer. UGH every jaw-dropping shot was cut away from so quickly to another jaw-dropping shot, to another jaw-dropping shot, etc. that I had no time to really appreciate them as much as I wanted :/
I'm so glad epics are still…
Exodus: Gods and Kings is surprisingly not a complete failure. It's more of a mixed bag for me.
There are some epic moments of grand proportions with hundreds of extras. I can always appreciate a massive production like this. It's visually stunning and very good technically. Christian Bale is good as Moses and pretty much carried the film for me.
The faults come from just how bland it feels to me for majority of the film. The plagues and red sea sequences are great but I never felt like the film was trying especially hard to make something special. It felt like a product, like a studio hadn't made a 'historical epic' in while. Another thing that probably won't bother…
Action!: The Scott Brothers – How To Get Screwed By Spielberg Twice W/ Ridley Scott
The year was 2014. The Hollywood industry was in full swing of this trend at that time which took fantasy stories and gave them a more realistic spin. Any element of fantasy or hope is left behind in favor of a dark and brooding atmosphere. During the same period of time another trend emerged (but this was shorter), where directors took these Bible stories and stripped much of their most supernatural elements, these two directors, Aronofsky and Scott, tried to translate these stories and give their iconic characters a large dose of doubt, questioning their own beliefs, an "atheist touch" if you will.
SPOILER ALERT:…
a big dumb expensive-looking epic by a director who likes to make big dumb expensive-looking epics, so what's to hate? the white-washing, yeah, not great, but i have more of an issue with the bloodless swordfights mandated by the $200 million dollar budget. i mean, come on, out of all the films that ridley scott should have a director's cut for, THIS is the one that would benefit the most from that, and yet... we're just stuck with this weird revisionist/atheistic take on the bible that's afraid to be brutal & gritty, which is what it needs to be, because ridley's real good at that. exodus isn't bad, it's quite stupendously-made in several respects, but it's also just obviously compromised in a way that so many modern hollywood films tend to be obviously compromised.
100-word review: Why do I, while watching this, feel like Joel Edgerton, at any minute, is gonna burst into an orchestral cover of The Sound of Silence? Between this and Noah, 2014 was a huge year for cinematic adaptations of Biblical stories, and honestly? Neither film is as bad as the rating would make you believe in my opinion. As an epic retelling, Exodus: Gods and Kings is competent enough, as its director has proven he can deliver on in the past; it's in the 'smaller stories', like the (lack of) deepening of Moses' relationship with 'secondary' characters that the film stumbles.
i am no longer an atheist thanks to this. i now believe in the bible and my bible says christian bale is god.
