Fantastic Four
Synopsis
4 times the action. 4 times the adventure. 4 times the fantastic.
During a space voyage, four scientists are altered by cosmic rays: Reed Richards gains the ability to stretch his body; Sue Storm can become invisible; Johnny Storm controls fire; and Ben Grimm is turned into a super-strong … thing. Together, these "Fantastic Four" must now thwart the evil plans of Dr. Doom and save the world from certain destruction.

This movie did a great job of getting the characterizations right for each of the Fantastic Four. For me, Chris Evans really stands out as Johnny Storm though. He has the perfect, over the top, cocky attitude to play the Human Torch. The interactions between him and the Thing were some of the best parts of the film.
The only two real points that detract from the film are Reed's CGI and the fact that with almost every move the FF make, they endanger more lives than they are saving. Every time Reed uses his powers it looks like you're watching a cartoon. Susan and Johnny's CGI looked awesome, so I don't know why they couldn't get Reed right. And…

How did this film ever get made?

A fun family super hero film, it is a bit of a strange group and may have worked better as group already in existence rather than as a origin story as there is a lot of suspension of disbelief required to keep up with it. I have no connection to the characters other than these films so was not bothered by any of this but I struggled to see how they worked as a team as they were all so different. Fun if you really like the comic book films but overall not worth searching out.

There's a sequel too. Oh God.

While this has been a much maligned film I found this origin story of the first family of superheroes entertaining. The comedy works for the most part. Frankly the closest thing to a serious take on this franchise would be something like The Incredibles. The special effects are shiny enough. I find it amusing that the best action set pieces are often caused by members of the team. They cause a pile up then are praised for saving lives. The weakest part is probably Doctor Doom. No fault of the actor but the light tone sacrifices a strong villain. It is a fun romp with a lot of extra cheese.

Proof that not all Marvel characters make good films. Massive jumps in the plot, a pretty weak origin backstory, and a villain who is defeated far too quickly and easily. I found myself with no emotional connection to the characters (other than "Hey look! It's Captain America!") and not feeling engaged and engrossed in the film in the way that I am with other superhero films. The whole thing felt unbelievable, unrealistic and false... but it occasionally looked good.

My stepdaughter turned this on, it was the scene after dr doom kills a guy in a parking garage and when Johnny Storm leaves to go to a motorcycle event...
It the span of 5 minutes I was marketed -- Jiffy Pop, ESPN, New York Post, Samung, Adrenaline drink, X Games, Dell, Burger King, Activision, Troy Lee Designs, Lunchables, Wal Mart, Pepsi, Xbox, Arnette, Dos Equis, Fox, Hamilton, Mountain Dew Code Red, Kool Aid, Natural Geyser, Sobe, Under Armour......
Oh yeah, I guess there were plot points happening somewhere on screen too.

I thought it couldn't be as bad as everybody says but there really is nothing to recommend.

Ultimate Marvel Movie Marathon
Probably the worst of the modern Marvel movies. I'd be interested to know just how well the comics of Fantastic 4 sell compared with others such as Spider-Man and X-Men. I mean, we've all heard of these characters but I wouldn't imagine there's too many people that actually like them over and above Cap, Spidey, Stark or Hulk. In other words, just because they exist in comics, doesn't mean they need a movie.
The movie's tone is probably right for the source material. Yet another reboot by Chronicle director next year could prove me wrong but will likely be a train wreck, and here's why, the source material.
Mr Fantastic, the thing, invisible…

Not the best of the superhero films, and far from "fantastic", but it sure gets the job done. Great special effects and actors, and the smoking Alba. It's a very solid film, and worth your time.
