Come for the Frankenhooker. Stay for the exploding prostitutes and sassy drag queens.

When I last saw this, I'm not even sure I knew what sex was, much less a crack whore. Now it strikes me as an uncompromising trash classic. Lorinz's unhinged lead performance goes a long way toward grounding the absurdity that surrounds him, and the note of sad co-dependence that the film ends on is so consistent in Henenlotter's work that he really must be considered an auteur. Perhaps too zany to function entirely as horror, this is nonetheless singular and ultimately disturbing. In my opinion the criminally underrated Bad Biology trumps this, but the margin is smaller than I had previously assumed.

Only on a rewatch does it strike me how good James Loritz is in this.
Made the same year as Basket Case 2. Henenlotter, you genius!

A trash masterpiece. It bemuses me that Troma films are enduringly popular, when the films of Frank Hennenlotter exist, while Troma's output represents the worst kind of crass manufactured cult movie, Hennenlotter's genuinely demented output is the real deal.
Frankenhooker may not be his best film, but it is my personal favourite, largely due to the brilliant performance of James Lorenz, an actor who with more NY punk rock attitude than any other.

The magical thing about a Frank Henenlotter film - and it really applies to his entire filmography, really - is that even with a premise like a mad scientist from New Jersey feeding a bunch of prostitutes Super Crack, exploding them so he can acquire spare body parts to rebuild his dead fiancee after a tragic remote controlled lawnmower accident, Henenlotter really puts a fuck of a lot of effort into developing alarmingly charming characters.
Henenlotter's not unlike Russ Meyer in a way - you go into both their movies expecting exploitation and sure you get that, but you get so much more if you pay attention.

After recently watching Frankenstein (1931) and The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) I decided to check out this modern take on the story. Frankenhooker is certainly an interesting film, with just a little bit of sleaze thrown in, and clearly owes a debt to Re-Animator (1985). It is also rather bizarre, to the point where I'm not particularly inclined to discuss the plot as it really deserves to be seen to be believed (and besides, the title should give you a good indication of what to expect). Although this film is quite fun it is also somewhat slow in places, and the acting leaves a little to be desired. The special effects are suitably schlocky and the ending should most definitely…

A movie I just love so much and have so much fun watching every time. This is a perfect horror comedies. Some really great visuals in this too for the kind of movie it is. Amazing fun

This was brilliant. I was in the mood for an 80's cheesefest, and this served it up to me on a platter. The storyline was refreshingly different - rather than the standard 80's fare of teens being hacked and slashed at camp, this focused on a young man trying to rebuild his perfect girlfriend, using the dismembered pieces of prostitutes bodies! So much fun, an absolute must-see if you love 80's horror.

Saw this back in 1990, and don't remember liking it. I just saw it a few weeks ago, and wondered what was wrong with me back then.
I think it is now a minor classic of the era.

This is just great. The main character puts on a goofy verse throughout and channels his inner Jeffrey Combs, which is just what this tongue-in-cheek horror-comedy needs. In fact, the whole affair has a Re-Animator vibe to it, to the point that the line between homage and rip-off is blurred. But it totally works for Frankenhooker. (Wouldn't it have been great if they had gotten Combs himself for the role?)
If you like lawnmower deaths, exploding prostitutes, body-part monsters, and super-crack - and who doesn't? - then this is your movie. I can watch this one over and over.
