Generically amusing film, but it pushed on for too long. Not a genuine, notable storyline. Actors weren’t great. The stand up prospect individually was substandard and inadequate.

I actually enjoyed an Adam Sandler movie. Please help, sirs. I am down in the ocean with Netflix on, forced to watch Sandler movie after Sandler movie.
My bones have turned soft.
My laughter echoes.

Adam Sandler basically plays himself in this: a comedian who does a lot of dumb movies and wants to be taken seriously. As he usually does when he gives a serious performance, he's actually great in this film. I actually would have felt a little more sympathetic for Sandler...
...if he didn't pull off the same stupid shit to this very day.

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Many are guilty of misjudging Apatow's Funny People, myself included. I remember finding it an unfunny and often frustrating watch back in 2009. Perhaps the title is too misleading, or expecting audiences to have sympathy for the foul creature that is Adam Sandler is one step too far, but on a repeat viewing, this is actually a pretty fine work.
Fewer 'comedies' are as structured, understated and emotionally resonant as this, and whilst I still wouldn't care if Sandler dropped dead tomorrow, I'm glad he survived to star in this...
But feel free to take him now God; he's no use to us now.

Comedy Drama Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Johna Hill and a ton of cameos
When I first saw this movie I was a little disappointed, I was probably expecting a straight forward turn your mind off kind of comedy. So today browsing through Blockbuster I decided to give this a rewatch. I'm really glad I did, I honestly enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. I see a lot of two star reviews and I can't figure out why except for its easy for people to hate on Sandler. The statement that a movie is too long....I can't even begin to understand that. If I ever say a movie is too long it's because it…

This movie is overly sentimental and it hurts it pretty badly. It has its funny moments but overall just too much of a chore to get through. Performances are not the greatest, Sandler is Sandler Rogan is Rogan. Bottom of the barrel for Apatow. I feel the film would've been better had they stuck with the sickness arc but that goes away halfway through and the whole film just fizzles from then on.

At this point, I think Sandler doesn't have anything left to give. Although his performance in this was good, he isn't a strong dramatic actor and there was a lot required in his role. It falls in an awkward place between funny and depressing.

Not a horrible film, but not the greatest. It could have, and should have, been way shorter. With how long the film was, I think they definitely should have had more Aubrey Plaza.

Este es Judd Apatow BIEN. No es perfecta pero casi

This isn't a terrible movie, it's just a great example at terrible execution. It was a pretty good idea, but the dialogue is mostly unfunny (which is a double no-no for comedians), the length/editing/pacing is just terrible, and I could never develop any sort of attachment or even care about the characters or story. As others have said time and time again, the movie really seems like a masterclass in everything you shouldn't do as an editor.
That all said, there's two reasons you might want to sit through the first hour - Aubrey Plaza and Eric Bana come in with a few scenes in the second half, and I thought they were the best part.
