Live action film based on the popular manga/anime series. Kurono and his childhood friend Kato are hit by a subway train and wake up in a room with a large black sphere - Gantz. Along with other newly deceased characters they are tasked with missions to kill aliens who live amongst us, amassing points for any kills - score 100 points and you can leave the game or choose to resurrect a fallen player. It's a cool concept, even if it's a little hard to follow in places (the second film helps clarify a couple of issues). The action scenes are quite violent and the film leaves on a suitable cliffhanger for its sequel.

An intriguing premise, with some incredible visuals and design (dem aliens) along with decent (if at times muddled) action sequences, is let down by a dependency on terrible actors playing dumb characters. You'll go hoarse from yelling at each underwritten soul to use their fucking guns once in a while, but you might enjoy doing it.

1.Wipe your meMory and be releaSed.
2.ReSurrect any plaYer you like."Oh wow. Did not see this coming. A live-action Manga adaptation did not sound like a fun time to me and yet...
This delightfully odd caper has two teens inexplicably brought back from the dead in highly bizarre circumstances to kill off alien forces on Earth. Then we are in a sort of Men in Black/Ghostbusters territory with a dash of Ichi the Killer. The plot is interesting and a bit different and some of these beasts we see our heroes fight are typically imaginative and weird. I keep using words like "odd" "weird" & "bizarre" but that doesn't mean that this film is niche. I would say…

A movie you'll either embrace, or reject, plain and simple. It's a bit easier to take if you're familiar with the source material (or the previous anime series adaptation). But just like the premise, the film is messy, unexplained, and oh so strange... all of which I liked.
