It Found A Voice... Now It Needs A Body
In the year 2029, Section 9, a group of cybernetically enhanced cops, are called in to investigate and stop a highly-wanted hacker known as 'The Puppetmaster'. Ghost in the Shell 2.0 is a reproduced version of its original 1995 counterpart. For the film's 2.0 release, all the original animations were re-created with the latest digital film and animation technologies.

Don't mistake my 1 star as hate for the film itself, but I am just expressing my distaste for this re-release of this anime classic. They have for some reason decided to shoehorn new visual elements into this version. Among these changes is new color correction for the vast majority of the film. This orangish color scheme more closely resembles the 2nd movie, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. Kind of pointless, I vastly prefer the blue colors of the original release. And in a far more idiotic move they decided to recreate several animated sequences with 3D CGI counter parts. It takes you out of the moment when you see it suddenly switch from beautiful hand drawn 2D animation to CG. They are somewhat pretty, but lifeless. But as this is the only way to get Ghost in the Shell 1 on Bluray officially in the US, this isn't unwatchable; it's just unnecessary. Stick with the original release.

Part of The December Project
I can't quite put my finger on the problem with this.
The story is definitely an interesting one. It's well told, has plenty of twists and the pacing is impressive. The visuals are certainly gorgeous and the world that has been built here is nicely done.
Yet for some reason I just couldn't engage with the characters. While they could be more rounded, they aren't badly done. The voice acting feels a little stilted but considering the fusion of human and tech this does make sense.
I think perhaps I was expecting a bit too much from the film and while I wouldn't call it a complete let down, it didn't really impress as much…

Story is great, no doubt about it. But they took '2.0' way to far with those visuals, watch it and you'll know what I mean.

I prefer the old colour scheme and I find the newly integrated 3D CG sequences jarring. The Audio is a lot better on this version especially the sound effects. But I still prefer the original version better on the whole, so I have rated this one half a star lower.

Still a fantastic movie, but I don't think the new CG sequences really added anything.

While the remake is heavy on CG, and CG boobs, I feel like it's not much of an improvement and you're better off watching the original. For a first time watcher this felt drawn out and heavy on the existentialism of a cyborg. The final fight scene was one of the best animated things I've seen though and it oozes style all the way through.
I just hope that the original won't feel as disjointed as this one. -

The original film is an absolute masterpiece but I've marked this down from 5 stars from two reasons; 1) The CGI that has been added is pretty crummy and jars with the original film. 2) Although the original film is on the Blu-ray it hasn't received an HD transfer.

Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film Ghost In The Shell, based on Masamune Shirow’s Manga, is one of the most important and influential Anime titles of the entire genre, sitting comfortably alongside "Akira" and "Ninja Scroll" as a part of the Holy Trinity of films that helped break Anime in the West. This seminal work not only spawned many imitators in the Anime world but most famously the Hollywood hit "The Matrix" too. It has spawned a sequel (2004’s Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence) and a spin-off TV series (GITS: Stand Alone Complex – which in turn has its own spin-off film "Solid State Society") and gave Anime one of its most popular heroines in the form of sexy cyborg Major…

Endlessly depressing to a dull degree. The female character was one of the more interesting aspects of the original and replacing her with the male lead is a poor move.
The repetition of the final sequence is tedious though it had a certain quality whereby it has a disorientating effect of what the reality is. The constant quoting of authors and philosophers is also grinding, especially when the dialogue does not fit well into the scene.
Still, there are interesting ideas and it is a true dystopian view.
The Reverence: A submarine.
