Michael Parkinson hosts a night of "live" paranormal investigation with the twist being everyone is in on it except the viewer. Building slowly with some nice red herrings and faked calls from the public to throw you off the scent, the last half hour really rachets up the tension and although it maybe goes a bit too far by bringing the haunting into the studio, remains convincing throughout.
Watching this made me feel kind of nostalgic for simpler times. You just couldn't do something like this any more. Google could have told you there was no such person as the paranormal expert, Twitter would be awash with people debunking everything that's going on and with there being such a huge…

Unfortunately this came out before I even existed, so I’m only able to imagine how great* it would have been to experience this when it originally aired. It’s little consolation to be able to just picture the sheer terror on everyone’s face afterward. Ah well…
Ghostwatch is a faux-documentary in which The BBC gives over a whole evening to an 'investigation into the supernatural'. Four respected presenters and a camera crew attempt to discover the truth behind 'The most haunted house in Britain', expecting to uncover a hoax. Only it isn’t.
As I probably ramble about…

I must say, I really wish I could have seen this 20 years ago, when it originally aired, when I was 9 years old because I honestly believe it would have scared the pee out of me. It's still a lot of fun, creepy and brought me back to Halloweens of my past.
What a bummer though, why did the mean skeptic have to be an American?!!
Also, "glory hole" must have a very different meaning in British English because I don't think Pam would be calling the small room under the stairs the same thing if that were the case.
I also feel it necessary to mention something that would normally be almost insignificant but Suzie's scratches seriously looked so real. That is some amazing FX if you ask me.
I'm glad I watched this, a big thanks to all the people who recommended I check it out!! I can see why you remember this so fondly.

El experimento más inteligente de la reciente televisión pero sobretodo una "película" que acojona mucho...

Really wonderfully executed, PsuedoDoc(Live Broadcast) Found Footage esque BBC production. A wonderful raw authenticity runs throughout. And massive credit due to the number of throw away scare it allows (Letting a camera pan and catch a fleeting glimpse, rather than center of attention focus)

This show gave me nightmares when it was first aired (I was 10). It's fuelled my obsession with found footage ever since.
It's dated badly, and a new viewer might laugh at the terrible acting and makeup (and even the premise now), but it still gives me chills. I've not had curtains in my bedroom ever since. -
Controversial piece of television this was back in the day (1992). I stuck it on thinking that it would degrade its scariness with age, but how wrong I was. Still packs an unbelievable punch and is still unbelievably scary. Michael Parkinson does a brilliant job of keeping it all going. Craig Charles looks high as a kite.
I'd probably advise you NOT to show this to anybody young. Probably should be higher than the "12" rating it got over here in the UK too. Check it out though. It is worth it.

I've read that it would be impossible to re-create a sociological phenomenon like Ghostwatch in the "know-it-all-in-real-time" Internet era. I'm not that sure. A Ghostwatch for the Twitter age would be indeed a different game, but the Internet is a privileged space of play, where fact and fiction blur seamlessly. In the end, what do we really know? Ghostwatch mimics the codes of early nineties live TV to great effect, while Stephen Volk, along the way, invented the horror mockumentary. Shame on you, Oren Peli!
He leído que sería imposible recrear un fenómeno sociológico como Ghostwatch en la era de Internet, de "lo-sabemos-todo-en-tiempo-real". Yo no estoy tan seguro. Un Ghostwatch para la era de Twitter sería un juego…

You know what? This was kind of charming. I know the whole idea of the mocumentary style with the fake paranormal activity has been done in (ha!) Paranormal Activity and probably most of the "ghost hunting" shows on television (and I'm unsure if this predates the ghost hunting-type shows on TV); But, either way, it was a good joke on the whole thing. And it's pretty entertaining to watch - even for it's extreme campieness.

Interesting... Not sure how it really fooled anyone, though. Spooky, but it left me wanting more.

It's utterly compelling. The astute casualness of everyone involved is so impressive. It's cheaply shot, the personalities are awkward, there are errors and the Beeb doesn't budget for shit. It's an achievement in imitating reality.
The multitude of ways it draws you in on a spiderweb of complacency...picking up on vague feelings of uncertainty or actual fear [Pipes appearances] is the real strength of the film. Found footage films always tease the horror, just out of reach. So you sit and wait and check your watch and oh dear there goes her head. This one fucking bores you. Then it kicks the chair away. It's doubly impressive seeing as I first watched this as a 13 year old Canadian some late night, not knowing anyone but picking up on the familiar beats of live television. I was in awe. So was Great Britain.
