Another Archive.org watch. Too many music breaks. Doesn't really get into anything much substantive about the guy or the organization. It's more of a mood piece, and the mood is disdainfulness.

there’s a lot of fellows in America who seem to think you can put a price tag on God’s love, and while they’re all unexceptional charlatans and deranged parasites or proto-daily wire-grade shitheels, there’s something comforting in knowing that to those of them that can feel and think, they know there’s nothing ahead and nothing behind. a path stripped of all parts and all beauty with no clearing at the end. maybe that’s what Herzog is getting at — the difference between holy men and Holy Men™️ is as much the ride as the road.

To quote Marlow in Heart of Darkness: "I let him run on, this papier-mache Mephistopheles, and it seemed to me that if I tried I could poke my forefinger through him, and would find nothing inside but a little loose dirt, maybe."
Herzog's ultimate statement on America: there is no there, there – just Glaube und Währung, faith and currency, and the empty performances that inspire the former and produce the latter. Scott's show, as depicted by Herzog, is this…

It has nothing to do with money but gods work relies on $600…wait a second yelling man…

Entertaining enough and I do love the aesthetics and vibes of this guys program. However, without being familiar with this man or his story I find it hard to get much out of this.

Nothing against Herzog but the whole documentary about a TV Religious man that yells and screams for people to donate money to the church of Jesus etc is just not my cup of tea. It honestly annoyed me more then anything how easy religion at times can take advantage of people because of their faith. The man himself admitted to hating the job and yet he did it for years beyond the date that proceeds it. At times it can be interesting but majority of it was hogwash.

It is more of an impression, not very informative.

Only Herzog could make me sit and watch a nutjob religious fraud.
Also shoutout to the fact I realized that Ben Affleck in JLO’s shit movie she made looks just like this dude -
Gene Scott, he is a televangelist, captivating crowds with every twist,
Preaching capitalism's bliss, his wealth doctrine he'll enlist,
In the temple of profit, his followers amass, sealed with a holy kiss. -
Fun movie about an archetypal rage-filled, American, evangelical, grifter bully. Herzog rolls tape as Gene Scott expounds on his own persecution and dreams of being left alone. Meanwhile, he endlessly counts money on live tv and screams for more. Shown here at 50 years old he seems burnt out and bitter. He lived for another 25 years.

This guy is a nut for sure but I feel like he’s some regular ass run of the mill shit you see growing up in Texas. I think this story is way more interesting if I’m from somewhere else. I know like 3-4 guys like this
