Goodbye Lenin!
2003 ‘Good Bye Lenin!’ Directed by Wolfgang Becker
Synopsis
The German Democratic Republic lives on -- in 79 square meters!
Good Bye Lenin was the biggest box-office hit for Germany in 2003. An affectionate and refreshing East/West-Germany comedy about a boy who’s mother was in a coma while the Berlin wall fell and when she wakes up he must try to keep her from learning what happen (since she was an avid communist supporter) to avoid shocking her which could lead to another heart attack.

A perfect balance of humour, drama and tenderness. A really really great film.

Surprisingly believable farce about nice East Berlin son hiding the news about reunification to his dying mother who woke up after being in a coma during the transition. Hugely successful in Germany, a charming instant comedy about what actually counts when history happens

This is a pretty good example of why I like movies way more than episodic television: if this premise were applied to your standard 22 minute situation comedy it would run its course in half a season before becoming one of many time-slot fillers that litter the airwaves. Provided it actually found an audience. Which it probably would. The set-up is no less dumb than, say, Two and a Half Men, and that's been around for a decade.
Somehow, as a feature, it works. Still high-concept and improbable but as a narrative device it's effective at getting to the heart of the story, which turns out to be less about coming to grips with Germany's reunification (this aspect played up…

Ok, so… what do you do when your mother wakes up after being 8 months in a coma and you don't want her to know that the Berlin wall fell because she is a convinced socialist and that would be a total shock, probably ending in death?
Well, you lie to her. You lie to her because you don't want your mother to die from a heart attack, and that's the easiest thing to do if you don't want to hurt someone you love (but also the most complicated one).
You lie to her at all costs, even when she decides to go out and she sees the streets filled with things that shouldn't be there and there are millions…

I remember watching this movie a few years ago and really loved it! I still do because the plot is so believable and the acting genuine!

Excellent film.
It's an original, fun and interesting story about the changes in Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
We can see the socialist idealism fading very fast and the American culture invading Germany in a very funny way.
Also, Daniel Brühl gave a great performance. -
